Just trawled through this thread, here's my 2 bob;

Beatmatching is a fundamental.. WTF are you going to do when it falls out of sync while you're EQ'ing, let it play? Cut it over before the phrase end? Fuck no, you need to know how to do this.

Biggest example I've got that being able to beatmatch has proven itself to me.. Was at a mates jamming, had my laptop running RekordBox. Network fucked up and couldn't get another track on to the deck, had to quickly jam a CD in and beatmatch that, tempo's were ~3-4% out and I had probably 30seconds to hammer that badboy into perfection. Pulled it off, just, but fuck it was a GREAT feeling.

I agree with whoever posted that snippet about Angello and the no headphones thing, once you play your tunes enough you should know where the beatmatching is from the countless practice you've had, how many of you who have had tonnes of practice are now loading a track, tempo sliding before the waveform is there because you already know "It should be at +/- X%".. Hell getting to the point now I need to tell myself to stop nudging so much cos I know when it's in time - my tapping of the cue/play buttons are getting sharper.

That being said I see the flip side too, in fact I want to move to a more live performance myself. APC40/Maschiine etc, being able to control the parameters of how you got that sound in the first place is unbeatable, you're putting more of your soul into it.

A local DJ that I looked up to from my years of clubbing before I got into DJ'ing said to me once: Keep chipping away, eventually you'll just know when to hit play, without realising why. This is what comes from the practice. Live it, Love it, Learn it!

i think the big issue is that guys who beatmatch wouldnt really mind sync djs IF they use their spare time on stage/in the booth to do other cool things(and by that i dont mean beatrepeating and flanging every bar). The Drama here is that CDJ & Vinyl users dont want to see some dude turn up with his laptop, controller and god knows what else just to do the exact same job as they would do on the setup they already have

How do you know what a vinyl Dj is think....I started d.jing 20 years ago on vinyl because that's all that was out ...then moved to c.d on the Denon dn 2000 & 2500 ..then went to the cdj 1000 mk1 & 2 and numark cdx ..then went back to vinyl when the DVS time code came out mixvibes & Serato ...now I use midi controllers, numark ns7 & v7 ....as off now I,m just getting to know the new Denon dns 3900 ( a friend has just picked one ) the fucking thing is badass

I do a lot off remix sequencing & sampling & video mixing..so i sync sometimes ..so you can call a sync Dj if you like and bag me for it if you like but I would like you to try to do some off the shit I can do live....

Surely this would only be possible if you only ever played at the same BPM? I know that I wouldn't know exactly where a track should be pitched to +/- as sometimes i'll be playing a slower set and a track will need pitched down, other times the same track will need pitched up. That's where my ears and headphones come in handy. ;)

No house/electro is essentially 0.8 per bpm, moombah is 0.9 etc etc

Its never perfect but is a good place to start before fine tuning

The percentage is relevant to the original BPM. 0.8% will have a varying degree of BPM change for say, 120 bpm and 125 bpm track.

I do agree that 0.7/08% can be used as a rough guide, however, you will still need to use your ears/headphones to fine tune it like you say.

Hence, my non-understanding of how anyone can beatmatch without headphones.

Yeah of course but for genres that dont change too much in bpm like house and electro (which is how a steve angello set would go most likely staying at 128bpm) 125 - 132ish is all 0.8 per bpm give or take small differences, if you had edited tracks or perfect autocues set you could quite easily dj without headphones but you would be nudging the jog while people can hear it which isnt ideal
