Traktor vs Serato in the club.

Okay guys i want this to be basically a discussion for people deciding which route to go for when playing in clubs.

I want you to pick Traktor or Serato (whichever you use in the club) and explain why its good and what made you chose that over the other

I've used my Traktor box in a club once and i say it was annoying to setup literally took me 10 minutes because it was pretty dark.

Don't own any myself personally, but they are the exact same as far as cable set up goes. However seeing this reminded me of a video that I saw in a thread here a while ago, and can make it quicker/easier to setup. I couldn't find the video, but I remember how it works, so I drew it in pictures for you. What you need:

4 RCA Cables

2 Adapters that look like this:

so before you rock up to the club/booth, you have your serato box setup like this:

The adapter pictured above goes on the end of the green cables (the output of your serato). So then when you rock up to the booth it will look like this:

then what you do is unplug from the back of the CDJ's (NOT the mixer). The cable that you unplugged from the CDJs goes into the adapter on the end of the green cable (serato out). Then you plug the blue cable into the CDJs and your done. It will look like this:

So in summary, traktor and serato are no easier/harder than each other to set up, but maybe this will make it slightly easier for you.

As for traktor V serato, it really comes down to personal opinion.

I personally prefer traktor because of all the extra features it has to offer, and it is arguably just as stable as serato (2.0.3 anyway)

Not at all, Traktor is a lot less stable but as you said it is running alot more.

Depends if you will combine it with an x1 or something, if you are going straight timecode def go serato.

Majority of timecode club djs use serato man its basically the standard.

No 100% correct, having worked as a soundtech and also playing regularly now in sydney, almost every single dj uses serato, and as you said the only time they opt for traktor is when used with a controller like an X1 or a full on midi controller.

The clubs I frequent in Melbourne rarely have anyone playing with a laptop.

Having said that, the bar I work at (cocktail/tapas/club venue) is full of autosync whales on their MacBook Pro's.

I guess it ultimately comes down to the scene you're in, and where you're based.

Good talk andy i think that usually the bigger the club the less people with a laptop and midi controller setup like the s4 etc. just because they usually hire dudes who have been doing djing for a while and are most likely going to stick to their cds or usbs. That's not to say all of them do as I've been to many of the bigger clubs in newcastle where the dj is using a laptop.

Very scene and club related.

For example 80% of hip hop djs will be using serato with primarily vinyl maybe 60/40 compared to cds.

Majority of dance venues will be 80% cd or usb with 1 or 2 djs on the night using serato.

Where i play at candys and what club 1 in 10 use serato, it's pretty much all cd/usb.

Yeah i used my s4 in a few clubs around newy but soon got sick of it its just too much hassle. Like i was saying to my mate the other day there is nothing better then rocking up to a gig with just cds(or usbs) and your headphones

Yeah all the set up of a laptop and the bloody controller, also noticed how many djs struggle with the swapover and setup you would think they'd know this shit perfectly before they try it in a club.

But yeah tiny bag with headphones and 4 usbs perfect.

I'd think there are a lot more pro DJ's using Traktor than you guys reckon.

As for stability I've never seen traktor crash or have any issues for anyone that's used it in a club environment. myself included.

Where are they then lol, im not saying traktor's bad i used to use it as well but it's pretty clear serato is the choice of most club djs.

he said pro djs gremmis. check a lot of the festys youtube footage. A fair bit of traktor peeps from several genres.

in terms of usb versus traktor/ serato, at chinese laundry the other night 5 of 6 djs i saw were using traktor/ serato. only the guys before codes were using usb.

Moonchild, the dude in the sandbar, codes, craze and the dude after them were all using either traktor or serato

on sat i think moonchild and craze were traktor, codes is serato. Didnt see the others.

Yeah see there you go different places they use different stuff, but on a greater scale of sydney clubs it would definitely be serato.

You cant really bring the whole pro thing into it as it's out of context for the questions and alot of the videos would be primarily promotional material.

but yeah def in syd where ive been i reckon two years ago it was 90/10 serato/ traktor. but now about 50/50.

Yeah not sure, candys, arthouse, whatclub, soho, starfuckers, ivy etc have only ever seen serato, same as all the crap rnb places i used to work at.

It's more much more suited to the time code aspects whereas traktor's strength lay in controllers and launchpad types of things, really depends what you want from it.

I personally hate all the software lol

i think its more that traktor offers controllers more rather than serato is more suited for turntables. ive usd both and its pretty much the same if all you doing is using it as a crate box.

Yeah I was referring to pro's but even non-pro guys around Glasgow most of them use Traktor. I only know a handful of guys who use serato.

obviously I can't vouch for anywhere else in the non-pro circuit as I haven't been involved in it.
