SolDios Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Hey guys, so im designing a promo mix to record over the weekend. Im just wondering what I should be doing/looking for when recording/designing a promo mix?(P.S. yes I have mixed in key)One of my theories would be to have a banga every 3 tracks, the other 2 building up to it.Also to chuck in a commercial remix every now and then.Any help? Quote
OxyKon Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Yeah that's sounding pretty good sol, I usually go with the same method and have a few bangers every couple of tracks, and yeah have a few that people are gonna be like "OMG I love this track" Quote
Mitch Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Mix appropriately for your audience (whether thats a club, prospective mobile dj clients, etc)Make it flow energy wiseMake use of mixed in key where appropriate.Dont upload it til your 100% happy with it Quote
SolDios Posted May 21, 2012 Author Posted May 21, 2012 So what should I look for, im looking at posting it to event promoters (Underages and schoolies) Quote
OxyKon Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 What do you mean what to look for?As in what to say to the promoters, what tracks to mix? Quote
GREMM1S Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Its pretty hard to do good blanket promos man, gotta know the style of the club you want a gig at or at least keep the style of a few clubs youre going to send it too.Eg all it takes is for one song too commercial for one club to go nah and one song too heavy for another club to not like it. Quote
andyman Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Depends on the type of venue. If it's for underage gigs and schoolies, I'd say that's a safe bet.I need to pull my finger out and do this as well, to see if I can snag some club gigs. Quote
SolDios Posted May 22, 2012 Author Posted May 22, 2012 Im thinking because it's for schoolies and that I shouldn't make it too heavy like I usually do. more just electro and a bit of commercial, kinda like hobberz club velvet demo Quote
OxyKon Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Also another thing would be to make sure the tracks you select don't have swear words, I know it sounds stupid, but for a school function, the teachers n such won't appreciate that kind of stuff Quote
GREMM1S Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Yeah sounds good Sol, lots of mashups and interesting things too, quick transitions etc. That said its more so about skimming through the mix to hear what you play. Quote
SolDios Posted May 22, 2012 Author Posted May 22, 2012 This is my track list so far:Believe It (Club Mix) Rave Dirty All Night LongForever (Radio Edit) G6 N Stuff (Inphinity Bootleg)We No Speak Americano (Porter Robinson Remix) (Marten Edit)Killer Hangover (Jump Smokers Extended Mix)Sofi Needs A Ladder (Ft. Sofi)Haters Gonna HateTurbulent Rock AnthemSexy And I Know It (MADEin82 Remix)I'm Still Hot (Extended Mix)Babylon [steve Angello Edit]Save The World (Cazzette Remix) Quote
GREMM1S Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 Would probly go with newer cheese for some,g6, americano and all night long are pretty exhausted man.Change it up throw in one or two more indie stuff like pumped up kicks remixed.Go with the newer pitbul (heaps of the rubbish songs lol) jump smokers did a good remix of international love.Im still hot is also pretty old now, just thinking needs to be a bit more fresh man?Others might have different ideas see what they think as well. mattus123 Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 thats a pretty broad target audience you got there, you'll probably have to make a few different mixes for different peopleone for clubs, one for events, and one for your mobiling gigsclub mixes you could probs get away with a heavier mix and try snatch up a gig that allows you to play that type of music in the club (thats what im trying to do). If you make a heaps commercial mix and hand it in to clubs and that, chances r they'll expect u to play that Quote
SolDios Posted May 24, 2012 Author Posted May 24, 2012 ^ Yeh thanks! Im going to try establish myself as a electro/ D&B dj (With abit of wubstep)But yeh, il use my schoolies promo mix as my mobile one, as people generally like cheese (Shudder shudder) Quote
OxyKon Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 DnB, sol you stepping up the tempo a bit, I look forward to hearing some of this, there's a lot of great anthem style DnB out there that people would love, pendulum obviously, then there's sub focus, shockone, logistics, high contrast, etc Quote
SolDios Posted May 25, 2012 Author Posted May 25, 2012 ^ Chase and status too Just out of curiosity, what methods do you guys use when transfering from (128bpm - 130bpm) to 165bpm? I usually just do a wind down to drop. (Turn up the stop time, stop the track, wait for it to wind all the way down, drop in the next track on a short buildup to the next drop)For instance I do this with internet friends...track playing, winds down, everyone looks, thinks something is wrong, then they hear "AND NOW YOUR GOING TO DIE", they pump back up again instantly and go crazy at the drop. You obviously haven't listened to my mixes lol. There is heaps of different ways you can transfer between bpms. Think there is a different thread discussing this though. Will find it tonight Quote
OxyKon Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I've never been that great at change ups like that, I usually find tracks that change tempos in the middle, eg triphekta by downlink starts off drumstep (172) and after the 2nd breakdown drops into dubstep (140)Another example is game time by zomboy, starts off dubstep and then drops into dnb at 174 Quote
GREMM1S Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Make edits too, im not overly good at or comfortable with changing bpms all the time so making some edits especially of different remixes of the same song work well Quote
russell Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 ^^ kinda similar to that is to produce your own transition tracks to take you from 1 genre to the next. Quote
