kevboy Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Hey guys,I have been in Darwin for the last 6 months and have went to all of its nightclubs on numerous occasions to get a feel for the kind of music that the majority of people like or more so what the dj's are playing. Well as much as i love top 40 music with a hint of prog - psy trance, i think, i hope that people are open for a bit of change. I am from Ireland and there is a HUGE hard dance / trance / rave scene everwhere there. Here the DJ's do not even interact with the crowds, they keep the head down. I dont know about anyone else but this is really frustrating, i can see so much potential here and i think people would be open to change but how can i get this through to bar managers, promoters and fellow DJ's who are resident. It feels like the place is stuck in a rut and i believe that i am the breath of fresh air that it needs. That may sound a bit cocky but i am just very passionate about music and it kills me watching these nightclubs wasting and using only a tiny fraction of their potential. So my question is, how do i go about changing the minds of the guys who hire and fire DJ's i.e Club owners etc. I mean Hard Dance / Trance is basically non existant here from what i can work out (if anyone else knows different let me know) Quote
Mitch Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Look at working with a club manager to advertise and start a new night maybe ? It's always hard to get gigs when your trying to go against the flow and try something different, but if its the music you love you have to persevere with it.Good luck with it man Quote
kevboy Posted April 28, 2012 Author Posted April 28, 2012 Thanks man,I suppose a new night would be the way to go. I would even stand in the streets and hand out the flyers myself. I truely believe there is a place here for it. It brings me onto a new question. Why do different areas like different music. For example i mentioned that back home we are really heavy into hard styled music but oz seems to be more of a R&B / house / top 40 kind of country in general? (apologies if i am incorrect)Sorry i have just had a smoke and mind is working overdrive :s Quote
Mitch Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Just culture of areas i guess.Even within aus, different towns have different predominant styles of music. Melb has a big house/tech scene, whereas in Sydney its more of an electro/dubstep scene.Just depends where you are I guess Quote
GREMM1S Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Cant see you getting anywhere bar a monthly niche event for a genre like hard dance and trance in Darwin.Like even Sydney and Melb struggle to get regular events like that going. Quote
Gandy Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 welcome to australia, if its not top 40, or my other favourite "this song sucks there's no singing" then you're shit out of lucki am an avid trance fan myself and have yet to come across a venue/club playing it in Queensland Quote
