This Instalment will be focusing on making certain type's of bass's, Synth's and making drum loops.

Once again 95% of all of this material is outsourced from Dubstepforum.com

BASS

I will run through a few popular bass sounds. First up, the Reece Bass

REECE BASS

What is a reece bass?

A Reece Bass is when you get 2 saw waves which are both slightly out of tune which each other, ussualy around -.15 to +.15, and then add a low pass filter onto it and crank the resonance up a bit to create a low bussing bass.

How to do this?

Set 2 oscilators 2 a saw wave

Detune them by a few cents in oposite directions (add 15 to one and subtract 15 from the other)

Add a LowPass filter to the bass and bring down the cutoff a bit and add some resonance.

This is how to make a basic Reece. you can then use a range of other effects to create new bass sounds from this weather it be a big whomping bass, a wobble etc.

THE WOBBLE BASS

what is a wobble bass?

The wobble bass, which is very familiar in the fidget and dubstep scene's but can really be used in any genre, is a bass that...well it wobbles.

Example ->

( @1:30)

How to make this bass?

note: your synth will need to have a LFO to create this sounds (LFO = LowFrequencyOscilator)

Firstly, choose any basic waveform in your synth.

Secondly, select your LFO and set the speed (a good starting point is 1/8)

Next assign your LFO to the FILTER CUTOFF (most are made with Lowpass filter's, but experiment with others to get different sounds)

Your bass should now be wobbling. To create different wobbles, experiment with different LFO rates, different LFO wave types, Different waveform, Different Filters etc.

The Infamous YOY BASS

What is it?

The yoy bass is generally a vowel bass, a bass that sounds like it is saying vowel (YOY's, YEAH's, YAY's, YIY's) etc

Example -

(@0:42)

how to make it?

To do this you will need a synthesizer and a Bit Crusher of Formant Filter

The way i do this, is open up your synthesizer and choose a basic square, and run it through a low pass filter and put the resonance up a it, now attach and LFO to the cut off, have the cut off sitting at around 2/3rds of the way open. and have the lfo only affecting it a little bit.

next put your Bit Crusher effect onto your synth. Turn the resolution all the way up, then slowly bring down the sample rate and you will hear your synth slowly start to change, the higher your sample rate, the more deeper and grittier the sound gets.

Congratulations, you are yoying.
