Slippy Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 hi all,i currently have 2 cdj2000 and djm800, upgraded from 400's some time agoi love this setup, but am now desperately trying to save all i can to buy my first home by the end of this year, its a serious goal of mine, as part of this goal, i have moved from a rental property that was costing me 720 a week, to a much smaller one in worse area costing 410 a week.for both this reason (space and money) i am toying with the idea of selling my current gear (hoping to fetch 3600+ is that realistic?) and investing approx 1500 in a digital setup, something around 500-1000 on a good laptop, and 500-1000 on a controller, giving me about 2000 to add to my savings and hopefully still have all the features and build quality i love with this setupi was after advice if anyone has done this switch and if they regretted it?also which controller i could buy that would feel most similar and offer as much or more features than the 2000/rekordbox setup?was thinging either trakor s4, or ddjs1 (would go second hand but brand new for laptop) or something just from doing a bit of browsing.thanks in advance for any advice much appreciated! SolDios Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Dude in the long run your only going to have an extra 3 or 4k in the bank from it so id keep it. You would probably regret it on the long run.If you do decide to downgrade though, consider the ns6, a great unit and you will feel alot more at home on it. Quote
Hobberz Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Jesus man, 700 bucks a week in rent is pretty rude. In the long run you may save and have 2k in the bank but I dont think its worth it. You have already taken a step forward by finding a cheaper rental property, with what your saving in rent alone you could have that 2k saved in a few weeks and still keep your gear. Quote
Mitch Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Some people may say Don't sell, but they arent in your situation. There is also the other side, where you think of saving every dollar you can. It's all about weighing up whether you think the loss of your cdjs is worth that cash.I just moved house and haven't moved my cdjs to new house yet. It's been 3 days and I miss them already, hate to think of not owning them at all. Just something to think about, whether the pain of not having them is worth the money. I don't think I could live without my decks it's almost an escape for me, not sure how much you value them though Quote
Hobberz Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 ^ ThisI was nearly forced to sell my gear a few months ago due to money problems, I just stuck it out for a while and tried to be smarter with my cash so I could keep my gear. Its totally up to you at the end of the day and its a hard decision, I hope you work something out so you can have the best of both worlds Quote
mattus123 Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Id keep them man, especially after you've just bought themi dunno how much u spend on going out on the weekend, but maybe cutting back on those nights out might save you the same amount of money as selling the decks would.id hang onto them, theres other ways you can get some cash together Quote
Slippy Posted February 5, 2012 Author Posted February 5, 2012 ok cool awesome thanks for all genuine replies !!mitch im in the same boat haha ive been here for 2 weeks now but had to get rid of awesome desk that used to have gear on as theres no room, so i need to buy a smaller desk before i can set them up... its terrible i miss it so much... its funny i used to enjoy going home and listening to music, but now that does not cut it, have to be mixing it to get my fix haha i think i will get them setup with a new table, save hard till july and hopefully dont have to look at downgrading!thanks again guys much apprecited. peace Quote
Gandy Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 ive been through what your going through now, i had to sell all my setup to keep my head above water. I sold all of my setup bar my speakers and went cold turkey with no gear or production software for a good 6-8 months, hardest thing ive ever done. If its not your full time job then its a sacrifise you are going to have to make, then when things turn around and your ready to buy again, you get to appreciate it a lot more plus buy all the latest shit (well not really in your case seeing you had 2000s ), which is awesome.i never regretted it, i sat down, made a mature decision and did what i had to do to get by, and now ive just bought a new digital setup (numark NS6 plus st150) and love all the new shit i get with a controller + TT. Controller makes it sooooo easy to pack up and go to a mates place/party/corporate function/dj gig. Quote
tubby Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 I'd suggest selling, but set a good reserve so you're not just giving them away.reason - it might only be 3-4K on top of hundreds of thousands, but it'll be years before you get to paying off that last few thousand and it'll be racking up interest that whole time. And if it can make the diffference between a 20% deposit or not (even with help from family) the saving in mortgage insurance can be several thousand dollars. Quote

Lurk6r Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 If your going to sell. Set a reserve and buy an S4. You can use it as a mixer down the track. Quote
OxyKon Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Bro i cant say ive ever been in your situation but i kinda understand where your coming from, at the end of the day it really depends on how much you love your gear, i have the exact setup you have and for me personally, these are the most important items i own, i could never sell them, in a way my setup completes me. but like i said, it depends how much you love your gear, if your seriously happy with downgrading to get your house then thats the main thing, that your happy Quote
russell Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 You need to decide how happy you'd be having a different set-up. At the end of the day we live in a world of debt so your always gonna owe money for something. If you sell now with the intention of buying a digital set-up, will that be enough for you or will you, further down the line, want to upgrade to something like you have now?I've been in the situation where I've head to sell some gear and I really wish I didn't as there's always been other things i need money for so chances are i'll never get to replace them. If it's not a matter of being able to afford to live I'd say keep what you have and save for the house that little bit longer that it takes to raise the same amount of money you'd expect from the sale. Slippy Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 mmmm lots of good points really gets me thinking, i setup my gear last night and loving it but the thing is i do need a laptop, and it wont hurt to chuck them on ebay or gumtree with a high reserve as mentioned above, and if i do get what im after, can drop say ~600 on a lappy and 800 or so on a good controller, what do you guys reckon is most similar controller in terms of layout/functions to a cdj2000 or maybe a controller with even more functions?cheers!edit: my current lappy resets randomly, completely unusuable for any kind of mixing as happens way too often plus its veryyy outdated now and battery is usueless needs to be on charger contsantly Quote
lok204 Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I just switched from a pair of CDJ-400's and a 4 chan Vestax to a Traktor set-up with Xone 1d and 2d.I love the Xone's mainly due to the fun of making custom mappings and all the cool personalised stuff you can do and the creative opportunities available with sample decks and extra effects etc.On the flipside - I'm yet to roadtest this new setup so portability and reliability are two issues yet to be tested. The plan is also to keep my cdj's and mixer in the studio for a number of reasons - I believe it's good to have a mix on decks every now and then when you have a MIDI set-up in the same way an electric guitarist glam rock guy should jam on his acoustic sometimes. Plus I want to have facilities for others that want to mix at mine.So switch to controller and enjoy the hell out of it cos it is the future! But consider if you may miss the decks and wheter it may be best just to hold onto what you have...is that $1000-$2000 really worth it? Quote
GREMM1S Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 why not downgrade to 850s/900s and a 700 or 1000s if u use cds? Save a bit of cash and still have the familar large jog pioneer feel. Quote
Lurk6r Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 ddjt1 if you want a controller with the pioneer feel? Altough I feel the s4 has better integration. Quote
