Griffin continues to turn out iOS accessories at CES, but none appear quite as useful for budding independent musicians than their new MIDI docks.

Griffin’s two new docks potentially turn the iPad into a reasonably powerful portable music studio solution. Griffin’s cheaper option the MIDIConnect ($79.99)adds a standard 5-pin DIN MIDI-in port to the iPad allowing users to plug in keyboards, guitars, and other MIDI devices. Also, it allows users to record these MIDI devices directly to the iPad. The MIDIConnect includes a MIDI-out as well allowing the iPad to be used as a MIDI Controller.

Griffin’s more expensive and feature filled option is the StudioConnect ($149). The StudioConnect has the same MIDI-in and MIDI-out connections as its cheaper sibling, but adds .25” mono port, a 3.5mm jack, an additional 3.5mm headphone jack (with its own volume knob), as well as left and right line-level RCA plugs.

The crazy amount of ports available on the StudioConnect definitely warrants the added price, and effectively turns the iPad into a mobile studio. This doesn’t take away from what the MIDIConnect accomplishes though. Both products aim to make mobile music composition a much more professional and affordable affair.
