Mitch Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 So i've seen a few forum members (including myself) set up/try to set up online audio streams for DJ mixes. So I thought i'd whip a thread up that explains how to do this using nicecast on a mac. For windows users, i'll probably make a windows version using icecast soon.NOTE - This tutorial is for audio streaming only, if you want to do a video stream, check out Livestream (www.livestream.com)1. Download and install program to applications folder- http://rogueamoeba.com/nicecast/(Note free version allows up to 60 mins broadcast, paid version has unlimited time).2. Set up a static IP on your mac-Open system preferences-Network-Take note of the IP address you currently have. We will need this number (In this shot, mine is 10.0.0.1)-Click automatic up the top, then edit locations-Click the plus to add a new location, I will call mine ‘Home’ -Click done-Click on your connection type you will be using on the left (wifi or Ethernet)-Click advanced -> TCP/IP-On the drop down list next to configure IPv4, change the option to ‘Using DHCP with manual address’-That IP address you took note of earlier, this is where you need it. Type that into the IPv4 box. Your settings should look something like below (obviously your IP will be different - it will probably be either be a 192.168.x.x number or a 10.x.x.x number). You'll see in the screenshots the one I typed in is different, I know what i'm doing, for sake of ease keep yours the same -Click OK, then Apply.-Open a browser and test to see your internet works. If not, go back over this step.*NOTE* - The reason I set it up using the locations, is if you go and join someone elses network, the manual address may stop you from connecting properly to another network. So you can open that dropdown list and select 'Automatic' for when/if you hook up to other networks, and 'Home' for when your at home (derp).3. Open ports on router. For this you will need to know your router model. You will find the model number on the router box somewhereGo to http://portforward.com/-A list of routers will appear. Find your router-Skip the advertisements-A list of programs will appear. Click Icecast.-A Page will then appear with detailed instructions and screenshots of how to open the ports you need NOTE – Firefox is probably the best browser to use to do this, some routers have dodgy config pages that don’t work with all browsers. If you are having trouble loading router pages properly, applying changes etc. this could be your problem. Try a different browser first.-Wait a few minutes, then test to see if the port has been opened successfully. Go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ , type in the port number you opened (usually 8000 in this case) and it should hopefully report a success.4. Configure nicecast-Open nicecast-Click source-There is a dropdown box that allows you to select what type of audio you will be broadcasting. In my case I will be plugging my decks into the line in port of my mac, so choose ‘Audio device’.-There is then another box on the right, allowing you to choose which audio source you will be broadcasting. In my case it is the line in port of my mac, however if you have the record out from your mixer going into your Traktor/Serato box, you will have to select your Traktor/Serato card as the source.-Go to the quality tab. Select a quality depending on your connection speed. As I live in a rural area, I will select low quality as my internet can’t stream at higher quality. Select what you think your internet can handle. If it starts cutting out, you can come back to this part and lower the quality. 5. Get Ready to stream-Ensure your rec out is plugged into your computers sound card and everything is ready to go-Click start broadcast-Click the share tab, then click check now. It will open a pop up window to let you know the connection is good. If it says sucess, move on. If not, you have most likely made a mistake in the port forwarding process, so go back and check that. 6. Start Mixing! -Note: You may need to adjust the volume bar to avoid clipping-The highlighted link below is the one you copy and share to all your listenersNote - Over the next couple of hours i may be modifying this a bit, i've probably spelt some things wrong etc.If any parts aren't detailed/helpful enough, tell me and i'll fix it up Hope this will help you all out. There is a bit involved in setting it up initally, but once you have set it up, all you need to do is open nicecast, start the broadcast and share the link to everyone. Quote
