I know some people sort into BPM and shit like that but I have alot of different genres and a retarded assortment of tunes.

I'm not burning to CD cause I've got TSP

What's the best way to sort my music?

Posted

wow a title in romaji?

anyways i create bins of genre-ish, and then within the genre i sort by bpm.

then in tsp you can load the bins you want along the top of the organiser. else access on the side thru the explorer.

in terms of genre i give it a ruff name and shove whatever goes together. so it might be called disco, but there could be some funk house in there. or ill give it a name like "for drunk grrls".

also i use trainspotter to organise it, and it will update your traktor playlist (the nml file i think). ill link it up in a tick

here is trainspotter. it was created by one of the geniuses on NI forum (or djtt cant remember, but i am sure he is on both).

it allows you to create smart playlists (and ones that actually work not like you damn apple!!)

it also allows you to use the comments section to create your own classifications, which can then show up as acolumn in traktor AND is searchable.

as usual i got all excited and then apathy set in, and i use it simply to genrify my tracks and create playlists.

i think there is also an option for getting the key of tracks if you donate 5 euros

I have mine assorted in to folders, my folders are;

Commercial Original (non remix)

Commercial Remixes

Electro

House

Early Night Tunes

Dubstep

ADJF Tracks

Break Beats

Assorted Favourites

Mash Ups

RnB

I think thats it. I have all my folders made in iTunes, than once in TSP i can drag and drop them from the side search bar into the folders along the top.

I just tag all my songs with all the info (title, artist, album, key, bpm, genre) then make a playlist folder for each new month - eg "2012-01"

Inside that folder I'll make a playlist for an individual release if I bought the full cd/ep. Then put the rest in a separate playlist "DL'ed in jan '12". Sometimes I split that playlist into genres, depending how many songs are in it. It's usually only 50-100 tracks anyway, so I just leave it.

From this I can easily search/browse. Searching is easy as all songs are tagged correctly, and browsing is also easy, as I'll have a good idea of how long ago I got the track, and look in that months playlist folder.

I also make playlists for each genre to act as a pool of songs to choose from for each gig I do. The day before I just put songs I think will be appropriate for that night in the playlists

I use Itunes (yeah..yeah...I know)

I create a folder for each genre and then divide it into playlists based on a theoretical 'musical journey'. Each playlist is sorted with the most current at the top and each is rated out of five stars. It would look something like this

Progressive House

2.1 Builders (starting the night)

2.2 Uplifting Prog House (the point at which people start tapping their feet)

2.3 Funky Prog House (people start dancing)

2.4 Commercial Prog House (folks getting into it)

2.5 Big Room Prog House (Up tempo full on prog house)

2.6 Trance/Prog Crossover (tracks that allow you to move easily into another genre)

Trance

3.1 Builders

3.4 Commercial Trance (familiar stuff that folks enjoy)

3.5 BRT (Big Room Trance)

3.6 Vocal BRT (Vocal Big Room Trance)

3.7 Banging Trance (YEAH BOI!)

Etc

So you can walk into a venue and if you know whats already being played, you just start at that point on the list. You can also move up and down the playlists without worrying about playing anything too different in style from the last track.

You could sort it by Key? (Just a concept)

i started doing that recently, good idea i think.

Key, BPM, Artist, Track, Time and waaaay over here --> i rating thing. just cause i like options :teef:

all are in seperate genre folders to.

By genre then by track or artist name inside genre playlist

i jus sort mine out this way with every1's favourite program itunes :P

i used to do it the same way mitch does by making a folder for each month, but my track selections became too extreme and hard to keep up, i should really take a day to go through them all again

I also have a thumb drive that I use when I'm playing out that I fill up with tracks from an itunes playlist that I use on my phone for music I listen to under the foldernames:

Fuckin awesome DnB

Bad as fuck Hiphop

Pretty nice Dubstep

Shitty Electro

Hotshit Mixes

(the lists are named that because I get a kick out of telling siri to 'play hiphop' and she says 'Now playing Bad as fuck Hiphop'

This is some shit I'm really bad at. I'm so used to year sof sortin gmy records out and looking for them by the sleeve that when it comes to organising .wavs I suck.

It's basically just seperate play lists for genres and if a track fits 1 or more genres then it'll be launched in each list. I just do this internally in TSP.

Some cool ideas I probably should of used. Got a new hard drive the other week so it was a good op for me to re-organise my playlists in itunes. I play gigs which require a wide selection of music so I have a bit of everything.

Mine is set out like this:

(Folder)

1. Opening Set -

(Sub playlists)

1.1 Chilled Dubby

1.2 Disco

1.3 Jacking

1.4 Pop Progressive

1.5 Pub Hits

1.6 Indie/Rock (Triple J stuff)

2. Main Set -

2.1 Big House

2.2 Charts/Remixes/Mashups

2.3 Complextro

2.4 Dutch House

2.5 Electro

2.6 Heavy Dubstep

2.7 Hip Hop

2.8 Old School Remixes

2.9 Tech House

2.10 Top 40 Originals

3. Closing Set -

3.1 Acid/Bass

3.2 Big House

3.3 Minimal

3.4 Moombahton

3.5 Psychedelic/Tribal
