Addi Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Hey guysGot approached by a good mate last night, he is keen for me to teach him a bit about mixing and stuff. He also suggested if he catches on pretty quick me and him could partner up and form a DJ "duo" (anyone got a better word for it haha). Cuz he is a good mate it sounds like a good idea, could be pretty fun. There are a fair few DJs out there who work in twos. What are people thoughts on this? Considering i'm pretty much just starting to play pubs/clubs, do you think venue's care if you are on your own or in 2? Is it easier one way or another? I guess my thoughts are that it would work out better to break into the club scene, we could probably invite a larger crowd with both of us bringing different groups of friends, and more reliable if one of us can't make a gig there is still one of us to do the gig. Anyone here been in a DJ duo like this? I know Jonny has with Knocked up noise, and he seemed to do heaps well and get tons of gigsCheers Quote
Jaz Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 All comes down to personal preference man. Give the duo a go. It can't hurt... if u don't like it go back to solo Quote
lok204 Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 I don't see much point in duo's unless they can do something that one person couldn't do on their own. Quote
MelodyIlliterate Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 sounds like fun man, and i presume club owners have the whole mentality of 2 for the price of one kinda thing, so probably a great way to get noticed Quote
LabRat Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 I've done the duo thing but it's basically Just mixing back to back (2 or 3 tracks each, whatever you agree on)I'd prefer to rock the house on my own but I'd play back to back again some time Quote
russell Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 I've done the duo thing but it's basically Just mixing back to back (2 or 3 tracks each, whatever you agree on)Not if you use 4 decks and 2 mixers. Quote

eggssell Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 I think russ means both djs rockin at the sametime a la ztrip and emile Quote

andyman Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 It can be good or bad I think.Positives would have to be the 2 different styles that would be bought to the table, but that can be a negative as well as there would be a lack of creative control. Quote

dflux4 Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Give it a go with the duo bro, I was pretty much your mate and asked a friend to teach me how to mix. We just had our first gig on Friday night that went really well.Because you will be teaching your mate it will make you learn more in the process. If all else fails nothing has been lost and you can continue down your own path. Quote
Addi Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 Cheers for the responses ladsAs I said he is a good mate, and we both have the same music taste so I don't think that would be too much of a problem during a set. I'll have to give it a crack I reckon, nothin to lose! Quote
MelodyIlliterate Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 put a live bedroom mix of you two on soundcloud so we can see if you guys mesh, make sure you turn off the recording before the happy ending k bruz? Quote
andyman Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Another positive, double the Jesus pose. Quote
Dominant Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Slightly different styles can make a duo great but I have seen duos where one was great and I would hit the DF for his three songs and then leave for the next whales three songs and repeat, got pretty annoying. Quote

djarmed Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 If 2 dj's are behind the decks I would expect some mind blowing shit. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk Quote
pundaddy Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I've done a some duo sets, and solo and duo both have their pro's and cons, rocking it out by yourself and getting to drop the good tracks on your own feels great, but having a mate there with you is a great re-assurance, if anything goes wrong. But in the end its ultimately up to you, but see how you go together, you never know, you guys could kill it together. Quote
Addi Posted December 13, 2011 Author Posted December 13, 2011 If 2 dj's are behind the decks I would expect some mind blowing shit. Well I don't think the set would be too different from playing on your own in terms of the quality. Probably just easier to vibe off one another and come up will cool ideas while the other is mixing, or perhaps someone sets up loops/acapellas or whatever. Plenty of DJ duos out there though, like Bombs Away, Aston Shuffle, Bloody Beetroots, Crookers, Plump DJs, Stanton Warriors etc etc. None of them are heaps better live compared to other single djs I don't think.I've done a some duo sets, and solo and duo both have their pro's and cons, rocking it out by yourself and getting to drop the good tracks on your own feels great, but having a mate there with you is a great re-assurance, if anything goes wrong. Had my mate round for a few hours tonight, had a bit of a mix. It's actually pretty eye opening to try teach someone ay! you realise just how much shit there is to learn and how difficult it can be to pick up the basics at first haha Quote
