Building up a House Music Collection

Hey Fellas,

I just started DJing and I'm loving it! Except there is one small problem, I realize that I have no music (only a couple of downloaded tunes which I plan to buy later). So my question is how do you build up your music collection (House preferably), do people buy it online and then burn to disks or do they buy the CDs and play songs straight off them.

-Thanks!

less and less is coming out on CDs and only available online these days, so its all about hunting around on websites to find those gold tracks. some sites that to look on:

www.beatport.com

www.soundcloud.com

www.djcity.com (and www.djcity.co.uk)

www.djdownload.com

www.junodownload.com

dance music blogs

there is an extended list of sites to purchase music in the beginner section.

If i'm playing a gig soon and its going to be mostly mainstream music that will need to be played, i check out www.ariacharts.com.au to see what is popular on the charts at the time. Then try find good dance remixes of those songs to play

The thing with "house" music is, there are many different variations; namely, tech, deep, hard, vocal, uplifiting, etc.

I use beatport and a couple of blogs (PM me for details) to keep up to date with what's going on.

I find listening to things with an open mind is best too, and helps build your collection with a repertoire of tracks for every occasion.

Yeh, with my mdex I just sort my music by lows mids and highs

lows are for when everyone is ariving

mids arent quite dancing music, but too slow to be regarded as lows

highs are for dancing

aces are crowd pullers, e.g. party rock anthem and all that rubbish

I mostly do mobile work so all my music is fairly mainstream, but I mainly built it up by getting Annuals, Clubbers guides, 101 hits thingys and keeping an eye on the bilboard top 10, I know your trying to get into house, but just sayin the way I do it and hoping it will relate/help you in some way.

Find and listen to podcasts of the music your after. Some like Jaytechs (prog house)will provide you with a detailed playlist and its just a matter of searching the web for somewhere to buy the MP3 (beatport etc).

Great idea.

If you're more into the "real" underground kind of stuff, the Resident Advisor podcasts are a great place to start.

everyone dl's songs as well because if you buy an album, 99% of the time the songs are mixed into each other. Obviously it's really hard to mix a song that is already being mixed with another song.

Pretty much all the mixes people have posted on here will have track listings. Just listen to them and then find the songs you like. Not only will you find songs that you want, but you will be able to hear how different people mix.

Stompy is a good website for buying slighty less obvious tracks.

Theb est way to pickup on new music if your not sure what your looking for is, as mentioned, Resident Advisor podcasts. They also have a album/single review section linked up with Juno. Little White Earbuds is another good one for podcasts/reviews.

wat about with limited or no funds is there a sampling trick or like the old napster things that I used to hear about in sth park? Obviously I want to respect the artist as much as possible but it seems that some (eg:gorillaz) don't even allow you to mp3 or copy your purchased cd which is not ideal for controller/pc dj use.
