Slippy Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 ive got a house warming coming up soon with anyone from 24 - 30 (house warming is for a 26 yrold couple) and im def going to be bringing alot of top40 remixes i think they will be requested but im mainly planning to play stuff from aria club chart as i would say alot are going out every weekend and would be hearing/enjoy alot on the club chart.maybe the engagement party just would like some nice funky background tech house , who knows but best to ask as cupe said or even give them 2 or 3 mixtapes with very different styles and they can pick what they like:one top 40?one club? one tech house? if they want a mix of all 3 your laughin can go nuts but if anyone has advice for sol i def could use it also as this is one of my first proper gigs apart from cpl small house parties!but all in all i would definately say alot of songs from club chart you should definately have for the night Quote
Cupe Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 as I will be trying to keep away from top 40.is this your choice or theirs? Quote

andythemusician Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 In the last two months, two gigs I have played for this demographic:- First gig had all pop electro/house, plus pop 80s- Second gig had requests of Tupac & Eminem, which meant more rap and hiphop, and I correctly judged that Aussie pub rock would go down a treat tooSame age, wayyy different music. You need to make sure you have a wide selection of popular music if you are going in without any idea. Quote
imadje Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 sorry man, the wife just pointed out I've been whinging all morning about having to play crap 80's pop last night at a shit gig... I only just realised it would be worth pasting the tracklist here...For some reason itch is only telling song names but if you search for them they are all big tunes of the era. Obv dif country though so some of your locals may point out better options.Video Killed the Radio Star I Think We're Alone Now Just Can't Get Enough You Spin Me Right Round (Like A Record) The Reflex Labour Of Love Livin' On A Prayer You Give Love A Bad Name Heaven Is A Place On Earth Sweet Child O' Mine Summer of '69 Chant No. 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On) (Keep Feeling) Fascination Don't You Want Me The Look of Love 99 RED BALLONS Do You Really Want To Hurt Me Footloose Take On Me Kids In America Rio Mickey WAKE ME UP BEFORE YOU GO Karma Chameleon Call Me (Original Long Version) [*][Version] In Between Days The Sun Always Shines On TV and take all these:viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3809&start=75viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7007but you already knew about those threads ey?biggest issue I think you will have is in dealing with the punters at this one. Slippy Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 ^ another epic post from you mate, nice one Quote
eggssell Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Ummm if someone is 21. They were born in 1990. And had their teen years circa 2003-2008. Why would 80's pop be the type of music they listen too?Handful of classics sure but i think 21 year olds may be more into mid to late 90s to early 2000sI know the 23 yr olds that i know wouldnt want 80s music at their parties Quote
eggssell Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Now a more helpful post. As above bit difficult if they dont want top 40 cuz you cant rely on charts, and outside of top 40 there are a million genres! And other peeps may not be as open to music as us dj types. Like my raver holmies wouldnt really know who ozi battla is. Or my rnb/hip pop holmies wouldnt have a clue who calvertron is. And some of my pub/band crew wouldnt know who bigg proof is. So im going to go with a little theory. I say go with tunes that were going when they were 15-20. So for the 21 year old, thats 2005 to 2010. And for the older person thats 2000 to 2005.BUT people dont stop listening to new tunes, so use those years to get a pool of artists, but grab their new stuff too. And a few tracks from new artists that sound like these artists. One of the mistakes some mobile djs do is assuming people want to hear old shit. Just cause you get older doesnt mean you want to hear the same shit over and over again. Having a big pool of music id like to make suggestions. But any help with the genre? Quote
anditz Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Agree^For the 21st you'd want to look at playing stuff they listened to in their teen years so songs like:Gaelle - Give it backSneaky Sound System - PicturesYou could then throw in the odd song like Pon De Floor, or go to older stuff like Chumbawumba (This would be more towards the end of the night - after speeches)To start off the evening you could play some more indie popular stuff that people may have heard on the radio or tv but not know what it is. Or just start ripping out some oldschool Eric Prydz, Klass, Kaskade, that progressive house always makes for good background music when your levels are low + you'll always get the odd person at the party who acknowledges your mixing when you drop these sorts of songs lol. Just make sure you don't fall into the trap of shifting into big room house, I don't think people would like that very much - I find that genre starts to take away from the function its self to the point where people are concentrating on the music more so that the gathering. You have to find a songs that are mellow enough to not be in people face when they want to chat over drinks etc but maintain an up beat feel to provide for any patrons who wish to dance. As you lead into speeches (usually around 10ish) you should start to play some more popular stuff, not necessarily top40s but drop popular songs that every one knows, like stuff from Daft Punk, Calvin Harris (Flashback comes to mind). Then after speeches while you have everyone already around your setup you might want to go into some retro party stuff from the 90's like B boys fly girls and stuff from Run DMC even some 50 cent or Snoop (depending on the vibe you get off the people) Usually by this stage I've figured out what people want to hear so I just go from there, some times people want you to continue retro, other times they want you to play rnb or go back to pop/house/electro genre. imadje Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Why would 80's pop be the type of music they listen too?fuk nose, that's just one of the things Sol said they asked for and I had a playlist right there from last night.they have decided they want a range of songs from the 80's till now. pundaddy Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 This album was pretty useful for me when i needed some oldies, dont let the name of the album fool you either.http://www.trancecommunity.com/Forum/sh ... hp?t=79118 Quote
andyman Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 Early on, just play shit that they'll know and can tap away too. When they're mildly sauced, bring out some funk - shit like DJ PP, Pleasurekraft, etc. Nothing too mental, just nice and cruisy. When they're full on fuck-eyed, Elton John, Cold Chisel, Meatloaf, etc. Quote
RichoKidd Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 I went out and purchased a few compilation albums (101 80's Hits, 101 90's Hits, 101 00's Hits etc.) Best investment you can make as a mobile DJ. If they said they don't know/mind "as long as its good" (Which I've had a couple times) you've got, literally, hundreds of songs that will be known by 80% of the party. Worst case scenario, let them look at your playlistism and let them pick. You're not doing clubs yet so requests are sort of mandatory Quote
