mattus123
hey guys ive been fiddling round with trying to mix different genres together, and im fidning it is working so well due to significantly different beat progressions or BPMjsut wondering if there are any tips and tricks to doing thiswould i need to slam the cross fader and do a real quick transition or something like that?on a seperate side question (i dont tihnk its big enough to start a new thread about, but if it is let me know and ill start a new thread).. do u guys write on ur cd's or put labels on them? cause ive heard that writing on them can damage them in the long term
Jaz
Some genre's flow into each other easy like house disco and electro are pretty straight forward, but going from say electro to dubstep is what I've been working on lately, I'm finding the easiest way is to find a song that already does this for you eg...It's bigger then hip hop - Sidney samson remixstarts of as electro, goes into dubstep, goes back to electro...just use it to your advantage works for most gente's, plenty of electro songs with disco in them, dubstep songs that turn to drum and bass, house music with dirty electro breakdowns etc etc
mattus123
yea that sounds like the best way (ive been working on electro to dubstep aswell)i was trying to fader slam or something liek that, but it just sounded shit! cheers
street
best option i reckon is finding 2 different remixes of the one track, for example:andas for the transistion, i like to loop the last bar or so of the build before the drop, fiddle with that, then slam the crossfade over and get the other track going.the transistion at 22:20 is what im talking about: http://soundcloud.com/streetcleaner-1/dubstelectro-mix

imadje
Ez mattus, crossing genres is probably the only way I still get a kick out of mixing. You can be as creative as you like, sometimes even making pretty much a new tune out of your transition between the two dif genres.here's a thread where some ideas were given previously:http://www.ausdjforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5281interested to see what you come up with mate
mattus123
totally forgot to run a search before i posted this thread, sorrybut solid advice all-round. thanks guys
Slippy
mad idea street i will try that, also mattus you can download tracks that are transitions so it will say for eg : Maroon 5 - Moves like Jagger 90 -128 Transition, so if your playing some hip hop/rnb at ~90 and want to move to house/electro just drop this tune and bam ur playing maroon 5 at 128 with a very smooth transition that had hours spent on it instead of a quick speed up from yourself!i get from djcity but they are everywhere, just google "transition XX-XX" and see what tunes u have at your disposal if you need a very specific transtion to fit in with a mix your constructiingthere are some really cool remixes that start at eg 128 drop to 90 then move to 128 again so you can make use of these aswell, Hello vs paper planes for example Knas - The episode (i found these tracks in hoddis playlist i think, either way its a gold thread)
street
i had to delete that mix to make room for other tracks on my soundcloud but hopefully u got the idea.
LabRat
Suggestion for what you could do is progressively increase the tempo. You'll be doing this over a few tracks so it's pretty subtle. I've done it a few times going from electro / breaks / dubstep and works a treat. Those genres compliment each other anyway but it's still an effective way IMO
mattus123
yea i was considering slowly building up the tempoi was also thinking of lets say im mixing trance into electro.. i could slow down the trance to the 128 mark and jsut before the song drops hit the 'tempo reset' which will instantly bring it back to its regular BPM (around 144)do you recon this might throw off the audience with the sudden increase in BPM? imadje
^it might throw the audience if there are beats playing but if you can find a short vocal break or other change where the drums drop out you might get away with it.if you have two tunes matched say 128 and 144 but the 144 is at 128 and you want to speed it up you can by speeding up both. It's tricky keeping them matched but if you can do it just right you are at 144 for the drop after following a smooth increase of tempo over the course of the beatmatch. Guys who Sync do this pretty ez but it is poss manually too.
JonnyB
backspin and then press play haha
LabRat
Yeah it will. You dont want to make your tempo change obvious, just doesn't sound very clean.
ill_spector
find a track with different genre remix's and find a way to switch between them.
