Mitch Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 Hey guys,So tomorrow night i'm doing our school disco for years 7-12, and have been putting together a rough pool of songs to pick from. And realised i don't think i have much 'disco' kinda stuff. The kids will be between 13-18 so its a kind of wide range group. I have asked around a bit they are pretty much all into commercial, cheesy stuff. But what can you get away with playing at a 'disco'? I've put together a rough list of what i have so far (a bunch of newer stuff with some 80's coz there will be some teachers and parents there i'm presuming). So i'm thinking I play mostly cheese and mix it up with some old stuff during the night somewhere, but what do you guys think?Tracks i've been randomly picking are belowWhat I haven't got yet is all those old stuff you dance to like the macarena and all that crap, in case they want me to play it.Any suggestions as to how i can add or edit this list would be awesome guys Quote
SolDios Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 I think you got some good mixes there, but they are going to want the stock standard versions too. Also I wouldn't recommend playing that last set of songs you screen shotted with traktor. Quote
Mitch Posted September 14, 2011 Author Posted September 14, 2011 The only reason I put the last lot there is coz the teachers and shit said to have some 80s on hand in case they want it..And yer I didn't have the originals for alot of them, so I picked remixes that sound closest to the original. but if I have time I'll get the originals of some Quote
SolDios Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 I wouldn't play it even if they requested it, your target audience is the kids, and they are not going to want to dance to it. Quote
Mitch Posted September 14, 2011 Author Posted September 14, 2011 True, however I'm gonna keep it there anyway. It's in a separate playlist so i probably won't play it unless i absolutely have to. Trying to avoid it while still keeping them happy, so it at least looks like i made an effort to put what the teachers said in so i don't look like a jerk who doesn't listen. Quote
SolDios Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 When ever you get a request I use this guide:1. Have I already played it2. Is it the appropriate genre for the night3. will 90% of the audience like it?If you don't want to play it, just say "I will play it when it's suitable" Quote
Hobberz Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 I say go with a few of the older tracks. Honestly cant go wrong with Michael Jackson, Macarena, Nutbush, Love Shack etc, no matter how old/young the kids are I bet they are still up dancing.Think back to your school days, everyone use to run to the dance floor when all the old classics came out, even the stupid ones like "The Ketchup Song". I say also throw in things like;Mambo No. 5Any Vengaboys tracksAqua tracks Quote
imadje Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 I shy away from school discos but have been to a few with my daughter... obv there may be cultural differences but the guys i've seen had success have really dredged the barrel.macarenaagadoojive bunnyanything from high school musical or gleemambo no 5and what hobberz says^any pop song that has been in a disney or pixar film such as that one from shrek "hey now, you're a rock star" etc, things like that.plus the gaga, derulo etc shit but originals not remixes.even fuckin hakuna matata from the lion king went down well..this is why i shy away from them. Maybe one day though...There'll prob be a "best party pop hits ever" type compilation available that will do the job for you IMO.P.S. make absolutely sure you are playing radio edits... expilict lyrics = parents complaints (even though half the kids will have the proper version on their own ipods etc) Quote
Mitch Posted September 14, 2011 Author Posted September 14, 2011 I'm sure i got mambo no. 5 in there somewhere but yer love shack, nutbush and that old kinda stuff is just what i need to get. They are fail proof choices really. I couldn't think of the names, but that short list has got me remembering them lol. Yer i thought about the radio edit thing, ive put them in where i had them. However last week they had the formal with yr 9-12 and they had explicit versions of everything which teachers and parents didn't care about.. DJcity should have the rest in clean edits i'll try get all that done anyway, just to be safe. Thanks for these lists guys Quote

crundyy Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 I think you got some good mixes there, but they are going to want the stock standard versions too. Also I wouldn't recommend playing that last set of songs you screen shotted with traktor.bro, theres some mad tracks in that last screenshot Quote
Mitch Posted September 14, 2011 Author Posted September 14, 2011 You can't be hatin on the classics, they are still around for a reason aye Quote
hoddi Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 yeah as much as they love the new stuff, they r gon havr heaps of fun with some classics to. in my opinion that last screen shot is needed to break it up a bit, the teachers/parents will enjoy it and the kids wont mind either. macerenanutbushketchup song - i used to love this one haha Quote
