mattus123
Hey guys, so after missing out on Cap's first comp, cause of my shitty recoding devices i have finally got my shit together and recorded a mixany feedback would be appreciated.i felt i started fairly strong, but as it progresses there are some (what i think) dodgey transiitons, maybe im bein too harsh on myself? let me know cheers guys http://soundcloud.com/matty-whells/mix1
Slippy
hey mate just spent 15mins flicking through listening to a bit here and there making sure i found the transitions, and i liked it!!make sure you edit your post and add tracklist and transition times, alot of people just wont listen to your mix if you dont have that, so its going to get you more feedback as the listener can easliy jump through and get a feel for the groove and transitions with ease!personally i really liked the way it build up and got abit more party style towards the end, and only points to improve are *some* beatmatching (some transitions were matches perfect was very impressive thought was using sync till i hear the later parts so good job!!) and work on your eqing, and also phrase matching, im sure if you do a search theres some info on here but basically if you phrase match 2 songs nicely and eq it well, can really get some amazing transitions going with ease!what gear did you do this on? your beatmatching is quite good apart from a cpl transitions where it gets messy, but most of improvement would be in axctually *where* your starting bringing in the next track in, and the eqing while your doing it, like for example try sometimes to bring in with no base, so ur hearing just highs and some mids of new track but not much because its just the intro, then as the mids start to come in for new track, start killing the mids on other track.Because with some tracks if you have both mids going, (especially if both vocal) then it can sound messy even if beatmatches perfect! (thats why can be a real pain to mix a track that has vocals right to end into a track with vocals right at beginning) but try to make these eq changes when there is a change in one of the tracks, as this will make your mix be unnoticeable!! (hopefully haha) then when first drop/new phrase of new track comes, do a quick switch of the bass (turn original track bass down, and turn new tracks bass on)but yeah towards the end some of the tracks were nice got me bopping so good job just some mismatches beats but thats easy fix! imadje
yer mattus, like slippy i thought you had the sync button on until I heard a few slips later on.I also agree a little thought and practise at when to start one song in relation to the one that is already playing would be good. I recommend listening to your own mix above and really thinking: "what if i had started that one 2 or 4 bars later or earlier... where would the break and drop have fallen in relation to each other,"eg the mix at about 10.30... the tune you are turning down was just about to kick off but you mixed it across to the build up of the next tune... Had you lined up the phrases you may have found you could fade out the first track just as the second song was about to break to vox which may have maintained the energy across the transition? I dont know if this would work in this case, it's a theory to consider.also at about 15.30 the tune coming in is faded up over the other tune. The break falls nice but during the fade up you have two arpeggios playing which are not sounding great together... why not try just dropping str8 t the break in the same place but without the fade up 1st? again it's only theory, may sound rubbish when you try it, may drop like a bomb!Overall though you got it going on, just listen to your own mix and be critical and reflective, then redo it and see if the changes made it better or worse.. you got the matching down (mostly), it's trial and error time to see how they fit together best
mattus123
thanks heaps for the feedback guysyea i was definetly aware that the phrasing was off, like i would miss the point to start bringing in hte next track (was busy beatmatching or something) and it became a 'either drop it in now, or wait another 2 mins for another good place to start fading' situation...maybe i shoulda just waited but yea, defs need to work on the eqing a bit better, and maintaining the level of the mix throughout.ill try get a mix up in a couple of weeks.. compare some progress thanks guys! imadje
either drop it in now, or wait another 2 mins for another good place to start fading' situation...maybe i shoulda just waitedWhen I'm playing live I always follow a simple rule: If i'm not sure it's going to work I wait. Better to just start/stop tracks at the end than do a dodgy mix.Of course I aint saying you should do that now as you are looking for feedback on ideas and experiments... just backing up your realisation that waiting is always an option too. Jaz
pretty good mix man, spesh for your 1st recorded 1 only thing i want to point out is your waveform is a little low/short/quite, i mean ive got the soundcloud volume and my computer volume on max and its not enough ...try and get the whole thing like at 22 mins and it should be a bit better (dont wanna over do it though cause it will distort )

imadje
try switching the "mic in" to a "line in" if you can, they have different amounts of gain applied to them.
Jaz
if your mixer is nearly peaking make sure Audacity isnt recording low, and your line in isnt recording to low
