SolDios Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 But where do you go after your in venue's? more venue's? or do you send horde's of mix tapes to Ministry of sound and try to play at festivals? Quote
Jaz Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 you go to the studio...very rare anyone gets famous from just DJing these days sol, gotta make your own tracks bro Quote
LabRat Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 when you get to a venue, as a DJ, you hit a wall... you can only go to more venues and probably a festival or 2 but you're not going to get a great set time. even if you're playing peak time at some local tent, you're competing against industry big shots Quote
SolDios Posted September 5, 2011 Author Posted September 5, 2011 The question is, how do you become one of those big shots... Quote
Cupe Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Lots of hard work Sol....pffffffffffffffffffffffftCorrect answer: know the right people Quote
JonnyB Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 being a big dj has nothing to do with djing, it has to do with producing, how many superstar dj's got to wear they were from djing?a few that came through the DMC world championships, Grandmasterflash.AJAX is probaly australia's biggest dj that dosent produce, and he rarely goes over seas to play. Produce, go mainstream, and you will become famous.or you could dj because you simply like playing music you like to people that like listening to it.dont do it for the fame sol, do it for the love.i remember Hijack (a big jackin house/fidget) producer/dj said, and i can vouch for this because ive played with him, Hed much rather play a tiny room to people that love his music then to a hall to people that just want to rave to anything. When i supported kissy sell out and hijack, hijack requested to play in the tiny sideroom alongside us smaller name dj's, which would fit no more then 100 people, oposed to the main room which could probaly hold 700 (this was at Home Nightclub)/rant Quote
LabRat Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Lots of hard work Sol....pffffffffffffffffffffffftCorrect answer: know the right peoplethis.and i hope you love the cock coz you'll need to suck a lot of it lol well, here in perth you do anyways Quote
Gandy Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 whats kissey sellout like in person jonny? seems like a total cocksucker on radio1 lol WHALE never shuts up hate ppl who constantly talk over there sets burrr Quote
JonnyB Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 i never met him, but the guy i played with did, he seemed nice enough, had a smoke with him out the front then when they went back in made sure the security guards didnt touch him, but then my mate fucked up and accidently ankle tapped his girlfriend who ate shit (this is no word of a lie haha) and he didnt get angry understood it was an accident, so i guess he cant be a bad person?hijack is super nice though, Quote
Gandy Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 hijack seems like a bit of a legend hahaas for your question sol, after me having doing club scene now, im moving into production and making my monthly mix cds and working on doing some of my own promoting. My mix cds are getting quite popular now which is a pretty nice feeling when i get msgs from random ppl telling me how it makes their day listening to my stuff, which is the reason i got into djing in the first place, being able to turn someones day from a shit day to a happy day.i can see me spending quite a few years on production and once i start to get good at it i might shoot for a weekend radio slot somewhere, my goal would obviously be BBC Radio1 but any local/national spot would be nice Quote
eggssell Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 I disagree with some of what is above. Yes a lot of legend DJs dipped into producing. But some like Carl Cox, Roger Sanchez and many more are still better known as DJs to their production. Also, the present state is not necessarily about DJs hitting the wall and then leading to production. Im sure ive mentiomed it before. The problem in the EDM scene is someone will drop a hot track which goes viral, and then promoters want that person on a line up. Even if they cant DJ for shit. So they just go up like any other celebrity DJ and play their viral track and then their favourite tracks without any DJ skill whatsoever. Plenty of current hot producers have been picked for fests this way. And i aint talking about people who play their electronic track live. Thats not DJing, i.e the playing of prerecorded songs. And dont get me wrong i aint hating on it per se. In fact i found out anout it reading interviews on some of my fave producers (cant for the life of me remember who, im pretty sure one of the cats was from ed banger). Im just saying if there is this pool of DJs vying for positions, and all this bitching about bedroom sync djs or paris hilton djs, you then get some computer whizz who learnt a sequencing program then gets booked for a fest? I kinda flip flop about the fairness of that. Everyone loves your track already, why not let a dj play your awesome track. Quote
eggssell Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Oh and i aint saying thats the only thing in the present state. Of courseas above DJs are going on to kill it producing their own tracks..Chev, jonny, tomy, chris, sweetish and so on Quote
imadje Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 "So, venue's is most peoples goals...." nope.My goal is just to earn enough money to continue the lifestyle I love without having to do too much of any work that makes me want to murder someone. Quote
Gandy Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 not sure if that was directed at me eggs, but when i first got into it my goal was to play at venue;s, now that i have reached that goal im setting a new one of learning how to produce my own original tracks, not in it for the fame couldnt give a fuck about being famous, as long as my music makes ppl happy (as i previously said) then that to me is my ultimate goal, venues, producing etc are just things inbetween. Id like also like to be able to make enough to live from my work, so i dont have to go to my bitter ass 9-5 job to pay the bills Quote

I said there isnt many that make it purely through djing.I didn't day there was none. And if you look at the overall stats you can't deny a large majority of them are their thanks to their production. And I agree with you on the wholeFestival thing. I was just stating if you want to go beyond the club scene the beat way is to make a hit track. I didnt say it was the right/fairestWay.But there is no denying that is how it's being done these days.My OP was about not being sucked in to the fame . And do war you love.Gandy made a comment aboveSomewhere which sums it up perfectly which I'll quote and I I was able to would rep Quote
eggssell Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 Yeah for sure i dont think it was yer post i was disagreeing with. More the fact that not all DJs who produce went from dj to production. A lot go the other wayAnd i just realised i didnt answer OP. i dont know enuff about venue as i havent done it. Personally my goal was to mixtapes for my holmies. Which i have been doing for every summer for a few years now. Except they werent mixxed. i.e. It was like tge cassette tape mixtapes of the 80's except on cd. I do know though, once you go good in the local scene therebis always the international scene. A lot of aussies in ibiza i heard. And not just the big namers. Of My 3 fave club djs two dabbled in production but are prob stll remembered for their djing. Moto (aus's no.1 rnb & hip pop dj), shamus and kate monroe (who may or may not be doing ibiza gigs) Quote
anditz Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 No point really discussing what your goals "should be". You are an individual so don't go basing your goals around what other people have achieved. When the time is ready for you to move onto something new you'll know because you'll either a/ get bored with what you're doing or b/ feel like a new challenge. Right now you have a challenge which is to build up your skills and rep - that's all you should worry about. Ministry of Sounds isn't going to care about your mixtapes (unless its ridiculously unimaginably ridiculous), you have to make a name for yourself first...I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself lol - once you're good enough for MoS you'll have a better idea of how to achieve that goal. Also as you start to play clubs you affiliate yourself with all sorts of promoters - you will most likely start selling tickets to events like Stereosonic (the sucking dick phase) and so you can try and network your way into opportunities depending on how juicy your lips are. LabRat Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 I think he's just asking what happens once you've reached club level not as such everyone else's goals Quote
Suby Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 my goal is definitely to play venues in my area but this topic got me thinking, I really just want to play music I like to people who want to hear it and have a sick time. I have never really played anywhere but a couple of house parties but when you play songs that make people get up and dance, its just sick. I can only imagine playing a venue would be better again. I am yet to find out, but im working on it. Quote
anditz Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 I think he's just asking what happens once you've reached club level not as such everyone else's goalsonce you've reached club level you do whatever you think is best for you...not what other people say you should do. Quote
SolDios Posted September 7, 2011 Author Posted September 7, 2011 Im wondering how anna lunoe got big then, Perhaps because she's a chick, or knows the right people. But this proves it can be done without producingIm probs going to end up sucking dick Quote
Suby Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Im probes going to end up sucking dickLOLWUT Quote
eggssell Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Sol we just mentioned heaps of peeps who get big without production. But ey if you want the cock go for it Quote
SolDios Posted September 7, 2011 Author Posted September 7, 2011 ^ Yeh, I just went through and re read thingsfor the moment il concentrate on building my skills, but once I hit clubs I have to find the promoters that run my local events Quote
