Hey guys, im trying to get a mix recorded for Caps comp but im having heaps of difficulty recording.

I finally got audacity working, but when i recorded the volumes were way too high and it was capping off (i ithnk thats the right term).

I tried turning down the mic-in from audacity, but that didnt work. I also tried turnign down the 'monitor' dial on my mixer whihc is kinda like a master volume, that didnt work either.

the only way i could stop the capping was to turn down the individual levels of each cd player to something that was JUST above 0, probably like .2

when i did this thou, the volumes were turned down that much, that even when the song was crnaking, nothing was showing up on the LED meters

i made a pic to show wat im tlkain bout, cause im pretty sure i explained it terribly

any help would be great

thanks guys

it all comes down to a number of things man, the record in level on your computer, the record level on audacity, the gains on your mixer, the master volume on your mixer etc etc

you just have to play around until it gets right and un distorted...everyone's is different

Just checking:

if you have the option switch the mic input on your computer to "line". Mic level is different to CD

also chk you have your cds players plugged into a "line" input on the mixer not a "phono" input ofr same reason.

This.

A good quality AUX to RCA cable wont hurt either!

yea i got all that working thanks guys

recorded a mix

then encountered a whole new problem

it sounds like im fucking roudn with the filters throughout the entire mix, even thou i didnt use them

like volumes will randomly drop, bass will randomly fade out and back inagain

i itnhk its cause of a dodgey soundcard maybe?

any ideas?

that WAS goign to be my entrance to Caps competition, but i decided it jsut sounded like absolute ass

its pretty noticable around 6:40, 7:50, 10:30, 12:12, 15:30, 16:05

it happens right throughout the mix, u guys will n otice it straight away

i used audacity and also tried sony soundforge, had the same problem with both software which is what makes me tihnk it might be a shitty soundcard or something?

yeah mate, it's very easy to hear.

I would expect a soundcard fault to result in drop outs or clicks and pops not this sound at all.

Does this only happen when recording?

It's a weird one mate.

haha yea, thast why i cant narrow it down

it kinda sounds like a shitty video camera when recording, u know how it takes a few seconds for the camera mic to adjust to new volume levels?

yea it only happens when recording, when just mixing through speakers it sounded fine

Forgot about this, I had a listen and I'm stumped on this one sorry mate.

Like I said, I have that Usb sound card there you can have to see if it makes a difference. If not I will send it Andyman's way. :D

stumped mate, sorry.

it only happens when recording, it happens whichever recording software you use.

you did check you're souncard settings are set to line level not mic didnt you?

maybe you should try a different soundcard just to rule that out.

i didnt check soundcard levels, i might give that a go

Hoberz thanks for the thought mate, ill let u send it to andyman thou, im gonna be gettin a new laptop for uni which SHOULD have a better soundcard than dads laptop.

so im puttin all my eggs into that basket for the moment :)
