CDJ 400 and DJM 400

Hey was just wondering what everyones thoughts were on starting with the cdj 400s and djm 400 as my first set up?

yep, one of the best set-ups a beginner can get. It's cheap especially if you can pick it all up second hand.

Sounds like a good idea. might compare prices to a digital controller. Still trying to figure out my best beginner options myself.

Just to echo what everyone else said, they are perfect to begin on and can be had at a good price.

I started on them and stepped up to 900's and a 800 mixer with no problems at all.

After some research I am now tossing up between the cdjs n the ddj-s1 any thoughts or recommendations on this?

Most people will probably say CDJ's, but it really comes down to what you want and what will suit you best.

You will still be able to learn the basics on both CDJ's and/or controller. There is nothing wrong with controllers but I don't see the point in spending money on a controller when you can get some 400's and a mixer for nearly the same price.

What are your reasons on going for a controller now, Do you want the benefits of being able to use software or are you think the controller will be easier to lug around being an all-in-one unit?

Well haven't made any solid decision as of yet but saw the ddj-s1 in use today and was impressed by also not sure how easy it's gonna be getting the cdjs. Plus as u mentioned portability is a bonus lol

Fair enough. Do you have a shop in your are where you could go and make demo a controller and some CDJ's(they wont have 400's but some 350s or the likes will give you an idea). Or maybe know some people who have similar set-ups.

Also when CDJ's are in a road case Im pretty sure they are only a little bit longer and deeper in dimensions.

^ I went though that phase too! but think about this, your laptop crashes on the night, then what do you do? or if it dies, your screwed.

Cdj 400's would be much more reliable!

Yeah went to abstore today that's what got interested and as you said no 400s but they had 350s. Was thinking if I got the controller it would be easy to change to cdjs down the track anyway wouldnt it? Or vice versa?

You would have to source CDJ400's second hand, but if you did decide to go CDJ's and wanted brand new gear the 350's are great too.

Um not sure how easy the transition from a controller to CDJ's would be, but Im sure it wouldn't be too bad. You would just have to get to know and navigate your way around the decks and know what buttons do what.

The transition isn't hard but depending on the controller they are often nothing like CDJ's

Put it this way, I had only ever used a mixtrack pro up until last night when i used a CDJ 400 + DJM 400 setup.

It was dark, but within 5-10 mins i knew what everything did so was fairly easy to transition. For me at least.
