Hey guys, ive been mixing on a couple of cdj350s and a djm350 for about a year and i am really keen to get a bit more into it and do some small gigs over the summer maybe some house parties and stuff. What do I do to get into gigs, do i start advertising or just asking around? Should I upgrade my equimptment? it seems like there is only so much I can do on it, or am i just getting a little ahead of myself? lol like I said I am pretty new to this stuff so any help would be great!

thanks mark

2 things spring to mind

1- find a friend or friend of a friend that is an active dj and tag along with them sort of like an apprenticeship

2- hammer every birthday party invite and notification on facebook and offer to dj for free to get some experience(they usually end up giving you money by the end of the night) this will get you tons of experience and build a following

yeah dood, make a page on facebook, get ya name out there! let everyone whos havin a party know your down to dj for them! dont charge heaps for it, just do it for the experience then when you build up more loweys that want to suck your dick (dj) at their party you'l be set!

that's how I got my first few gigs, flyers didn't get me anywhere, also keep an eye on the (friends events) on Facebook and advertise yourself on em, got 3 booked from that.

plus go out loads, meet everyone, especially be around when anyone says "all back to mine" ...lots of opportunities to dj in front of people, and meet them, at after parties.

Dont be scared to approach promoters aswell, seek out a couple on facebook, go out to clubs and introduce yourselves to them and ask them if they wouldnt mind having a listen to one of your mixes.

i found it easier to get club gigs (hotels too ect ect) than mobile gigs funnily enough.

which is why I dont do much mobile stuff anymore.

All about who you know and if your prepared to chat to promoters.

Be particularly interested in those that are having their parties at function centres. Alot of them are screaming out for resident DJ's or at the very least someone they can point their customers too. Get there early in the day to set so you can meet the owners/managers. alot of them wont do the graveyard shift when you are actually playing. Introduce yourself and just generally chat about what you do. We are now first port of call for 5 function centres in town and just got asked to resident another one on Sat nights but were booked nearly every saturday night until March next year.
