mattus123
Hey guysive been browsing the net and heard alot about what makes an effective set.everything seems to point to creating a set that is like a rollercoaster with ups and downsi can quite easily keep the set at a constant rate but im struggling to build it up nicely and bring it back down.how do you do it?is it song selection, changing the tempo...or a ocmbination of the both?CHEERS! Jaz
if your mixing for hours genre changes make it easy, start of with down tempo, move up to disco, then to house then to electro, then to trance then to dubstep or hardcore then reverse it and go the other way...so you have a looooong rise and then the same long fallbut if your doing mini sets it gets a little harder, for me at least more bass spells more energy so i keep the dirty as bass line's and wobbles n stuff for the middle of the mix, otherwise if you start with this massive bassy song its hard to go up from there...get me? CapFive
It's really hard to explain but some songs just hype you up more than others, listen to your library and you will start to realise what goes where, you eventually find yourself constantly organising your library on the fly as you listen, a user on here once said "if it sounds good, it is good" as you progress you will subliminally create your own signature to your sets. Mine is that I try to keep people on their toes with one massive peak and then easing back down to a cruisey finish Hope that helps
lloydc
jaz is right...genre changes help a lot, for exampledeep house> tech house> house> electro and then do it all in reverse.theres no hard and fast rule for this, but generally it's all about the energy within a song
mattus123
yea that makes sense, cheers guysi guess its been feeling a bit un natural tryin to manage tempo changes cause ive only been doin like 30min mixes, so any tempo changes seems a bit rushedwhen changing the tempo would you gradually increase the tempo over many songs..for exmaple, increase the tempo from 128 > 130 over 10 songsORwould you slam the cross fader from song a (128bpm) to song b (130bpm)? CapFive
I would only ever do a drastic transition if its into a floorfilla. That everyone loves
mattus123
yea thats wat i was inthkingu wouldnt be able to take the same approach to a slower song eithersomehow slamming a slow song on doesnt seem like a good idea
LabRat
I don't believe in this rollercoaster shit unless you're playing for a few hours (3+). I tend to keep the same energy or build it up from the first few songs. You're there to keep people dancing so dance they shall

Lurk6r
The way I like to do it when mobiling, is to break it up into +- 15 minutes mini mixes. Start of with a semi well known track, then build it up. When the floor is full keep going with another 2-3 good songs then wrap it up and mix in the next genre.Usually there will be young and older people, for the most part they will be open to most music, but i find its best when it alternates, so one group can dance and the other drink. As it gets near the end, i make the 'segments' smaller and smaller until im pretty much mixing whatever I want. Everybody will stay up because its near the end of the night and they know that next song could be anything, literally keeping them on their toes.
