ok just so this doesn't turn into a huge thing on copyright laws and shit like that, play in club safe, play mobile dj get licences.

i'm curious i was milling this over at work today

does a band that plays a cover of a song have to get the artists permission to do so?

or is it ok because they are actually playing the music on seperate instruments whereas we play it as a whole unit

very very difficult question, almost all the bands i come accross that play covers dont have a licence, i think it may be because essentialy they are not playing someone elses music directly, as in they are composing a track from scratch to mirror another if that makes any sence we as djs play exactly what the artist has made

WHICH PROGRAMS DO I GET HIM TO GET?

obviously ableton is a high priority

and i'm not sure about reason yet haven't had too much experience with it.
