In need of advice...

Firstly, hello, this is my first post here, as I was directed here from another forum. Please read.

Ok, my main goal is to get into Producing electric music. If it helps my favourite artists atm are probably Deadmau5 and EDX. But any dance is good for me within about a 10BPM range.

I started off ages ago just self taught on Virtual DJ and in the last 6 months I've fully moved to decks. Can now comfortably beat match, work EQs etc. I'm currently doing a Comprehensive course at United DJ School, just to get back to the basics and pick up a few things I haven't allready picked up, like using turntables, serato etc.

Ok, now once I have finished that, I hope to get some work as a DJ around Melbourne, as it the school states that their better students can be helped into employment (im not being arogant, but from what I have gathered I know the most out of the students in our class).

Once I have some work experience in the field and probably whilst getting the experience, I hope to get comfortable with Logic, Live, Cubase etc. Just self taught, from all reports, youtube and other forums are great.

Now my main question is, finally, that should I go on and do the EMP course at SAE and/or do the Audio Production Degree?

The EMP course is a fair bit of $ for a 2 night a week 6 month course, but it provides you access to all their knowledge, hardware and software and it also credits towards the degree.

The degree is very in depth and obviously, if done should be given 100%.

What are the likely hoods of achieving employment out of the course (it doesnt really matter where, Ill be producing on the side all the time) and can i achieve this knowledge somewhere else for cheaper? Is it worth it?

Please be realistic. I refuse to believe that you can just look through youtube and forums and acheive the same amount of knowledge as an audio engineer.

Thanks!

hi and welcome to adjf, to answer your question i've spent some time talking with the emp teacher at sae adelaide and he's told me the total outline of the course is to teach you ableton and reason to the degree he thinks that most people will need to start producing. whilst having a certificate 3 in emp is a qualification it isn't one that will land you jobs or money, the diploma on the other hand is enough to at the very least get you hired as a sound tech for a music event or a venue. or possibly be a sound engineer for a record label or studio.

hope this has helped you out, be aware that sae do courses in just the individual programs themselves so you may not need to pay 4000 but i think this doesn't start till next year

i'm doing EMP at SAE in brisbane at the moment. it is quite $$ i guess for such a short course. Its very informative, but i really think it comes down to your lecturer. The teacher we have for SAE is really really good and i've learnt so much from him just in the first few weeks. i've had about 2 years of playing about producing writing songs with friends etc. so far the course has been great.
