LabRat Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 pick a style - example dutch house. look for tracks from afrojack, sidney samson, apster, beatjackers etc on beatport and look at the "other users also purchased" section and you'll hear new artists with similar styles. it does take a while to build up a collection but you'll work out that with good mixing, you can mix anything together.find a style you like and go research like crazy! Ravni Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 key mixing??? basically detecting the key of a song got this program called mixed in key its not super accurate but it analyses tracks based on the key. wat i do is split all my tracks in files based on genrethen i analyse them and stick them in a folder labled with the key then it gives me a decent idea then i explore with in that and ventre into mixing up and down the keys and usally find some cool songs that go well together and sometimes mix across genres Quote

dim Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 cognarts sol. glad it's starting to work for ya. what street cleaner said is true, trial and error is a way fwd... ravni is also right: Mixed in key is good if you wanna go that way.what i've written below is about developing your own style, if you want to keep on down the path of the modern DJ listen to everybody else... if you want to blaze your own trail read on:i disagree with researching genres and thinking of things that will work well... that's for getting your head round it. Thousands of DJs do only that and that's why they all sound the same forever. No harm in doing it to pad out a set with filler, to make sure you have got your beatmatching down, or to keep a commercial situation earning you money but...If you are really able to beatmatch you no longer need to make things easy for yourself... So just listen to everything all the time everywhere with no exceptions. Occasionally you may find yourself naturally humming or singing a song along to a different one you are listening to. You will not have had to "think" about this, it will have just happened because your marvellous human brain has thrust it upon you. These are the pairs of songs that should mix well AND help you develop your own style.I just remembered this great quote from some rap or other I heard when I was your age:"it aint nothing like hiphop music,you like it coz you choose it."EGGS? can you name that tune?anyway: apply that philosophy to EDM, DnB, Dubstep etc etc and see where you get to.oh, and post mixes boss. Ravni Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 dim is right there lately my sets cross alot of different genre's last set i did at a mates party i started with chill out tracks at 1oobpm and disco tracks and finished at 130 bpm playin progressive tracks and wat not. a few yrs back id play just one or two genre's now i like building my sets according to the crowds mood. oh and i dont think i played one cheezey track there was some serious old skool classics in there Quote

fackedd Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 i think your looking way too much into this, you can mix 99% of dance tracks together. ie. 1 min intro and 1 min outro tracks.read that thread on mixing techniques or some shit, you should be mixing in the intros and outros as a beginner. Quote

Obviously tracks in the same key will sound better but you can mix everything.like i said a million times before just mix the intros and outros.just mix 2 deadmau5 songs if you have to. Quote
mattus123 Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 What i am currently doing, to improve my mixing (and someone correct me if this is a bad idea) is i jsut mix random songs togetheri whack one CD in one player pick a random track, put another CD in the other player and just mix them together. Even if i ithnk that they wont mix well together, i find a place in the song to start the transition (sometimes it will be in the middle of hte song)Slowly i find i am able to see what goes best with what, and im pretty sure its improving my mixing skills over all.I suppose this is a longwinded way of sayin wat streetcleaner said: 'trail and error' Quote

You will slowly get to know your music and know what works well with what, than when you have a crowd you will have some sort of idea on what can work. Quote
