SolDios
Hey, a school near me recently had there dj move to another state, so Im going to try and grab the gig. Any tips? Also, how would I get gigs at other schools? I don't want to undercut anyone else either if they already have a dj :/
Jaz
Approach the school to speak with who ever organises the events, my best guess would be 1 of the music, drama, or dance teachersand I wouldn't worry about under cutting anyone man, it's high school, how many DJ's are there in high school? eggssell
Hey sol i dont know how it is the mighty hilltop (hahaha i dont even know where the adelaide hills are) but i know our school always used the same mob. Which was one of the bigg mobile dj companies. I think if you were to approach all of them with a professional manner (i.e business cards, website, price list, insurance, licenses) they should be happy to consider. I guess also depends on size of school but yeah id say theyd go for more professional looking proprietors than backyard jobs. But definitely go for it and good luck w it man. Could be some nice regular cash
Lurk6r
Besides having the "profesional package", you need to communicate to them that you understand their needs as a school, namely safety, reliability and appropriateness.Eg. You have insurance, abide by standard trade practices (safety wire for lights, tape up cables, safe noise exposure)You have a backup system should something go wrong, running 2 amps, circuit breakers that kind of thing. This one is important, you in your contrAct have early termination terms for you and them. Eg if you can't do it, then you have to make it up to them. And that you have appropriate music that will keep the kids and teachers happy, eg no swearing, not overly aggressive no overt sexual themes, yet fun and danceable. That's my 2c. fackedd
I just had sex - lonely island goes down pretty well with the school usually. But yeah with safety, I had to get the powerleads on all my gear tested and tagged by a sparky to play at my uni. It's funny how much H&S is involved. andythemusician
^^ It's all departmental / government stuff.Same with gigs at council venues - the people running it don't give a shit, but they are required to check your gear is tested because that is the rules at all venues owned by the government.PITA. SolDios
Does it cost much to get it tested?
fackedd
depends, but you will have to get it done.I used a sparky my family uses for everything so he did it for like $30 for me. We've known him for years though.Might be someone here who used a random electrician.Think the price would depend on how many cables you have/how long it takes them to do it obviously. andythemusician
If you don't gig much, then its not really worth it.
fackedd
But he wont be allowed to play at some places unless he gets it done, My uni wouldn't let me play on campus or at our unibar untill I got it done. Schools would probably be the same.
Lurk6r
Don't forget the ppca licence. Does the money we pay them actually go to the artist? Or do anything worthwhile for that matter? Still it would make you look like a legit business.

SolDios
jesus, that really pisses me off, that ppca licence, what use does it have? why is it even there? besides another way to penny pinch. They all ready take almost 30% of our hard earned pay, and yet they make stupid crap like this >_<edit: there not even government, they can go screw themselves, ive already brought the songs so its not like im not contributing to the artists. dim
srs job gets more srs work if you do it well mate. You are not much older than some of the kids and if it is in your area then any kid who hears you do good at their school will make you their first choice for birthdays etc. plus no better way to advertise to mums and dads that you are available for weddings etc too.then as you get older so will the school class so instead of toeing the line for the govt and all that shit you end up with a ready made rep and get loads of 18ths, 21sts etc etc.I guess what i'm saying is: The licenses and eqpt certs you'll need for this job are no cost or hassle at all compared to trying to get known via advertising.Take the gig, toe the line, consider it an advertising strategy that also pays you and gets you legit instead of a hassle.
