I used to have a residency in a bar back home that had a 3am closing time. Some nights it would be busy but you always got the odd night that just emptied at around 12am. Lots of things can have a factor on how busy a pub is. Certainly in Glasgow anyway. Time of the month has a bearing with regards to when people get payed. Weekend before pay week is usually quiet. If there's a big night or 2 on in town pubs empty around 12 and people hit the club.

I've played to the bar staff a couple of times. It's better than having a mix in the house anyway... free booze and wages. :)

Last night = best gig to date

7:30 - arrive at club to set up gear, the dj from the night before said one of the xlr to rca cables was broken and took it with them, and manager didn't get another one organised for me as he didn't know what they were called, so there is only one cable there. Ring a few musician mates and drive around until i find some that will fit.

9:00 - finally find some cables and finish hooking up my decks and test (had to take my own decks to le club). Go to a mates where they are all having drinks before heading out.

10:15 - Drive mates and drop them at the pub, then head down the road to the club ready for a 10:30 start

10:30 - less than 10 people here for opening, so start playing prog and people are just sitting around tapping there feet, few go out the back to have a smoke etc.

11:30 - place is starting to get more people in here, group of ladies here for a b'day keep asking for show me love, and thought there was enough people there for them to want to start dancing, so i drop a mashup of it. Nek minute, 20-30 wahels come out of nowhere and everyone is on the d-floor

12:30 - place is now packed, dropping some hits and some classics. Spitfire's pump it up mashup went down awesome, so if you see this spitfire, killer tune :thumright:

1:00 - realise there is only an hour left and so many tunes i want to drop throughout the night, so enter boss mode, bring in songs every 1:30-2 mins, keeping the floor on their toes. Start playing some house and electro that isn't top 40, as well as some tracks that they would still know. Everyone was lapping it up.

1:50 - Manager comes up, 5 mins playing time left, so drop a flux pavilion 130-70bpm edit of kanye+jay-z, then mix that into the levels (skrillex remix) for my final track, and it went nuts.

2:00 - pack up, heaps of people are coming up and complimenting my mixing, texting and messaging on facebook. One random who was there facebooked me asking to do his 21st which isn't til next april so that was pretty cool

2:15 - have a chat to le manager, tells me the place was at max capacity (280 people) right til the end of the night. Which for a town of only around 7k is really good for this place. He then says they have managed second biggest night ever on record, so he was stoked about how well it went, especially for my first time there.

Manager is getting in contact with me on monday to book me for some more dates. Stoked about how well it all went

Nice one Fudd.

Must of been a night for good gigs, I played 10-12 and they placed was packed all night. I usually start off with some prog house but got straight into some commercial remixes and electro and had the place bouncing. I played Party Up-Bombs Away Remix which has a bit of a dub step break down and heard this group of chicks scream WOOOO DUBSTEP, that was my cue to unleash le wub wub wubs for the last 35-40mins. Finished off and put Jaz's Bleeps, Blops, and Wub Wubs...This Is Dubstep mix on while the staff cleaned up and we all enjoyed some shots.

Left at 1:30 to go to a venue across the road to see Butterz and Slynk(Brisbane Lads) playing at a monthly Cairns dub step night. Run into the manager of the club I made the demo for and asked if I was free to play NYE, so Im book for 2 venues that night. :) Finished off the night with some electro at another venue with Venuto(Sydney dude), he was that short they had road cases in the DJ booth for him to stand on to reach the CDJ's. Home at 7am, good times.

Sounds like you had a better time last night then I did dflux! Would of been pretty sweet to let loose and play good stuff

Anyway, played at the same pub I played at last week. If you didn't see my other post, ill quickly give you an intro to it. This pub is a proper pub, never been considered as a club, and they wanted to trial out 'summer parties' every Friday night, and I am the 'resident DJ' and I play from 9-12 every Friday. Anyway, last week was awesome fun. They had a couple of pool tables, all the TAB sports betting lol, Corona girls were there, plenty of people turned up and it was heaps of fun. Last night was just terrible. (p.s this is my first gig review so bare with me)

7:00 - Arrived at the pub to have a couple of beers before I played, had a feed with the missus and a few mates, had a punt etc. I was looking around and just had that feeling that it was gonna be a shit night. In saying that, there was a big christmas party outside for a building company with plenty of people, mainly tradies and their girlfriends, so I thought it might actually turn out alright.

8:30 - Started to bring my gear into the pub, set up and had everything ready

9:00 - Started playing my first few songs, mainly disco/house stuff as background music. Place looked alright, a fair few of my mates had turned up, but there wasn't a great deal of people, maybe 30 all up

9:15 - Bit of drama, a fair few people from the christmas party started coming in and wanted to play pool and mingle, but both pool tables were out of order so they cracked the shits and left.

9:30 - Pub definitely wasn't filling up with anyone, and the people at the christmas party weren't filtering inside so I was a bit worried

10:00 - A couple of my mates had to peel, so I only had about 15 mates left, plus about 10-15 people coming and going from the smokers area to where I was playing. Started playing more commercial stuff, Presets, Pnau etc...

10:15 - Everyone was still at the christmas party outside and it was just terrible inside. The night couldn't go quicker.

11:00 - A majority of people had left and it was pretty much just me playing in front of about 10 mates and about 10 other people. Was still playing as good as I could though, didn't wanna fuck about too much.

11:30 - The remainder of my mates were heading off to go into town, so I just approached the pub manager and asked if I should just cut it short. Pointless playing in front of just a couple people.

Still got full 3 hours of pay which was alright, and I was pretty happy with my mixing and song choice. I think the pool tables being out of order was a bit of a mood killer, I would of seen at least 20-30 people walk up to them to find out they weren't working. Obviously thats not the whole reason for the dead mood in the place, but if they play pool, they keep happy, buy more drinks, have a dance, bring other friends etc. Last week when the pool tables were going it was a heaps better vibe, so many people were around the pool tables having a game or watching, having a dance etc. This week was pretty much just people sitting down with nothing to do. Having a dance every now and then but the place just wasn't energetic enough.

Any tips or advice guys? Should I have tried doing something to lift the place a bit?

Just take the positives from the night bro, as some other have said we will all encounter the "shit" night sooner or later.

Just keep it up and keep us informed!
