OK so here goes my first gig log... for those that didn't hear my mate got us a gig at the Strathfield Sound Off competition in Brookvale. The owner wanted some background music whilst the competition was run and he wanted " anything dancey"

4:45pm: Get picked up from work by Kraver DJ and we are on the move. Destination Brookvale and currently heading across the Harbour Bridge. We need to be there for 5:30 to set up and be ready for 6. Traffic isn't too bad as we are just leaving before the rush hour on a Friday afternoon.

5:30pm: Arrive at Strathfield auto and already see a congregation of cars around the shop, located on Pittwater Rd in an Industrial area, its looks to be a perfect setting to play some beats. Go in side and find the boss Jason and do a quick intro. WE work out where we are going to place the table to have the decks on and start to set up.

6:00pm: A few more people start to arrive, Kraver jumps behind the decks and start to play some tracks.. The sun hasn't set yet and the glare is making it hard to see what tracks are on the CDJ900's.... Kraver jumps off and gets me to start playing... First song i was on a slight shake from the excitement, there are about 30 people just standing around talking shit. I decided to go with some cheese, playing Titanium (Nicky Romero remix) and continue going from there. Transitions weren't too bad so Kraver and i then go 4 for 4

7:00: The sound off has started there is about 60-80 people standing around checking out the db readings as the cars go through the heats. A few of the promo girls have come up to us asking us questions while we are playing some tracks, we kindly answer them and continue to down our beers (They weren't to harsh on the eyes lads ;) )

8:00: Ok so shit gets heavy start banging out some real dirty electro and Kraver is banging out the dub, have a few heads bumping but we aren't exactly at a club so we weren't expecting many people to be dancing. i jump out on the df and bust out a shuffle, by now we have lights a laser and a smoke machine cranking as well. At this time there is close to 100 people standing around.

9:00: Time for a break as they do some announcements, we chuck on a mix from my iPhone and let that play as we walk around a chat to a few people (no we didn't stand behind the decks with a pre mix pumping our arms in the air thinking we are mad whales :teef: )

10:00 Few more beers down and more tracks played i go upstairs to grab another drink and one of the boys introduces me to his mate charlie ;) feeling a lot better now floating around while Kraver is cranking the dub.

10:55 Competition is nearly over, what do you know Crundy turns up and comes to say hey while I'm behind the decks. I finish off a song or two and wonder over to Crundy to have a chat, his mate is a legend btw... :thumright:

11:30 Competition is done they hand out the trophies and everyone scatters. Now its time for packing up within 15 mins everything is broken down and put back into the car. I say good bye to the team at Strathfield Auto, bunch of mad whales they were and find the boss. Talk a quick bit of shit saying if there are any further comps we will be glad to play and if he can refer us on to others it would be appreciated. With the cash in my pocket we jet off to grab a bite to eat and go to sleep.

All in all a great way to ease myself into playing in front of people, yeh i fucked up a few times but hey its all apart of learning isn't it... :yahoo:

Sounds like you had a better time last night then I did dflux! Would of been pretty sweet to let loose and play good stuff

Anyway, played at the same pub I played at last week. If you didn't see my other post, ill quickly give you an intro to it. This pub is a proper pub, never been considered as a club, and they wanted to trial out 'summer parties' every Friday night, and I am the 'resident DJ' and I play from 9-12 every Friday. Anyway, last week was awesome fun. They had a couple of pool tables, all the TAB sports betting lol, Corona girls were there, plenty of people turned up and it was heaps of fun. Last night was just terrible. (p.s this is my first gig review so bare with me)

7:00 - Arrived at the pub to have a couple of beers before I played, had a feed with the missus and a few mates, had a punt etc. I was looking around and just had that feeling that it was gonna be a shit night. In saying that, there was a big christmas party outside for a building company with plenty of people, mainly tradies and their girlfriends, so I thought it might actually turn out alright.

8:30 - Started to bring my gear into the pub, set up and had everything ready

9:00 - Started playing my first few songs, mainly disco/house stuff as background music. Place looked alright, a fair few of my mates had turned up, but there wasn't a great deal of people, maybe 30 all up

9:15 - Bit of drama, a fair few people from the christmas party started coming in and wanted to play pool and mingle, but both pool tables were out of order so they cracked the shits and left.

9:30 - Pub definitely wasn't filling up with anyone, and the people at the christmas party weren't filtering inside so I was a bit worried

10:00 - A couple of my mates had to peel, so I only had about 15 mates left, plus about 10-15 people coming and going from the smokers area to where I was playing. Started playing more commercial stuff, Presets, Pnau etc...

10:15 - Everyone was still at the christmas party outside and it was just terrible inside. The night couldn't go quicker.

11:00 - A majority of people had left and it was pretty much just me playing in front of about 10 mates and about 10 other people. Was still playing as good as I could though, didn't wanna fuck about too much.

11:30 - The remainder of my mates were heading off to go into town, so I just approached the pub manager and asked if I should just cut it short. Pointless playing in front of just a couple people.

Still got full 3 hours of pay which was alright, and I was pretty happy with my mixing and song choice. I think the pool tables being out of order was a bit of a mood killer, I would of seen at least 20-30 people walk up to them to find out they weren't working. Obviously thats not the whole reason for the dead mood in the place, but if they play pool, they keep happy, buy more drinks, have a dance, bring other friends etc. Last week when the pool tables were going it was a heaps better vibe, so many people were around the pool tables having a game or watching, having a dance etc. This week was pretty much just people sitting down with nothing to do. Having a dance every now and then but the place just wasn't energetic enough.

Any tips or advice guys? Should I have tried doing something to lift the place a bit?

Yer sounds like the night was set up for failure with broken pool tables etc.

But as a DJ your always going to experience a dud night sometime in your career man, last weekend where i was playing there was a big fight early in the night and everyone left, wasn't my fault but night turned out shit because of it.

So just gotta roll with it, tell the manager to get the pool tables and shit fixed, and next time can pretty much guarantee it will be a better night.

Addidas, I have just started playing a new venue that has opened in town and have had a few nights like yours, for me the place not being well known yet makes it hard to get a crowd in there so you feel a bit stupid playing to a handful of people but than the next time you could have a packed dance floor and everyone is having a blast. Just gotta take the good with the bad and use this opportunity as a way to get your name out there and hopefully you will be playing in a bigger/better venue in no time. Good to see you kept up the quality of mixing when it was dead, very professional.
