As much influenced by fresh Vogel's toast, indoor cricket, eighties glam rock stage costumes and just the right amount of hermitism as they are informed by Jamaican dub, Memphis funk, Detroit techno and the timeless musical traditions of folk and bluegrass, Jeremy 'Terror Snake' Glenn and Dylan 'Downie Wolf' Jones are The Upbeats, an internationally renowned New Zealand based drum and bass production outfit turned ...DJ duo who just aren't like the others.

Abstracting inspiration for their production name from Lee Scratch Perry’s 1976 release The Upsetters: Super Ape back in the watershed year of 1998, The Upbeats (otherwise known as the Big Skeleton) have cut a unique and unclassifiable figure on the global drum and bass circuit since formally emerging back in 2001.

Signed up locally by Loop Recordings Aotearoa for their debut album release in New Zealand in 2004, The Upbeats soon drew themselves to the attention of drum and bass overlords Bad Company, who picked them up for the international release of their sophomore concept album Nobody’s Out There, on Bad Taste Recordings in 2008. Working concurrently, The Upbeats established their own label Non Vogue, to release their second album in New Zealand and push their unique direction in drum and bass overseas.

While those kettles were boiling on the stove, The Upbeats were busy building a strong and loyal fan base across the planet though extensive touring alongside the likes of Grooverider, Andy C, Concord Dawn, Shapeshifter and Dieselboy.

With most of Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand crossed off the list, The Upbeats can even lay claim to having performed in Siberia, where their sound was incredibly well received to say the very least.

Making this kind of noise and having Bad Company’s blessing did have its repercussions, and the likes of Virus Recordings, Soul:R, Project Human, Subtitles and Violence Recordings came door knocking for material for single releases, safely securing The Upbeats a seat at the same table as drum and bass’ current generation of ruling scene leaders across the planet.

That’s not what makes The Upbeats special though, that’s just the facts and figures. What sets The Upbeats apart is their character and influences as artists and individuals. Self-depreciating in humor and iconoclastic in approach, The Upbeats unique 21st century urban pub rock breakbeat fueled sound injects just the right dose of fluro, sweatbands, mullets and midi-triggered live reese basslines into drum and bass’ often formulaic, faceless nature.
