lloydc Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 First off, these are not my thoughts and I haven't put any of this theory into practice. I've quoted yakov (from mixedinkey.com) and thought you guys might be interested in reading/trying this for yourselves.... and to spark up some conversation.anway...Hi everyone,I am going to tell you about a special DJ technique that is used by hundreds of top DJs. It will help you create a perfect DJ mix that gets heard by thousands of people. If you release and sell your CDs, this mix will get higher review scores. If you're making a mix for your friends, there's a higher chance that they will burn it onto CDs and copy it to their iPods. This magic "sauce" creates the perfect DJ mix. Here is how you do it:1) Your first track must be an instrumental (no vocals)2) Your second track must have vocals3) The duration of your first track must be shorter than 2 minutes 30 seconds4) The duration of your second track must be shorter than 4 minutes5) All subsequent tracks must be shorter than 5 minutesYour DJ sets will sound much better. DJ Tiesto has used this technique hundreds of times in his DJ sets. Try it yourself and hear how good it sounds.-DJ Yakov Quote
andyman Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Interesting.Might try this and see what happens. Quote
eggssell Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 hmmmm. i dunno may work but i really dont believe in such rigid formulas. ill go check some of my fave mixes and see if they fit. i know for a fact a lot dont start with instrumentals so thats out Quote
Lurk6r Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Start with sandstorm, end with sandstorm. All other music is obsolete. Quote
Gandy Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Start with sandstorm, end with sandstorm. All other music is obsolete.^THIS!i picked up point 1 and 2 on my own when i first started out because i was afraid of clashing vocals on vocals, the other points may be down to pure theory (as in the timings and song structure) as to why it would be so smooth and im interested to try this out over the next week Quote
chrismak Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Copying formulas from a superstar DJ only serves to make you look like a clone. The perfect mix: is interestingtakes you on a journeystands out from the crowd Quote

Hobberz Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 The perfect mix is whatever the fuck you want it to beAgreed Quote
dim Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 I'm with richo, hobberz, djaz and especially mr chris on this one. That formula may be the perfect mix to get your mix listened to by venues/promoters who need to see you can tow the line and sound like everyone else. It's important to catch the attention quickly when the person has a pile of mixes to go through. Personally I do alwyas start with an instrumental but thats coz I add an intro scratch to show I can do that too. Then sure I mix onto next track V quick becasue I want to keep the attention I've got. But thats just in demos, it's got nothing to do with reading a crowd. One size does not fit all. Quote
JonnyB Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 nice post lloydc, but i think this guy is full of it to an extent.there is no 'formula' to the perfect mix. ive heard plenty of top dj's mixtapes with vocals or random shit as their intro's and i find that shit much more interesting then the start of a track.Play what you want, and people that like that stuff will listen. crundyy Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 if you actually dj like that with a set list of rules of each track your a gronk and your mum shouldve swallowed you.. Quote
lloydc Posted May 29, 2011 Author Posted May 29, 2011 if you actually dj like that with a set list of rules of each track your a gronk and your mum shouldve swallowed you..LOL'dI'm guessing that it has something to do with keeping people interested in what they're listening to. I do agree though, playing shit tracks and adhering to that formula would still be a shit mix tape. Quote
CapFive Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 The perfect set can't be formalised, its all about reading the crowd, live sets and mix tapes totally differ too, live sets are about hyping up the crowd, mix tapes are about keeping people interested with the technical transitions Quote
street Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 mixes with songs that have heaps of samples from movies and shit are the best. especially when theyre fucked up samples. Quote
