Primus87
Hi all, I'll start off by saying I'm pretty new to the whole dj world, so be patient with any stupid questions I may ask..What I'm after is some advice on possible set ups.Im a rock musician usually(bass, drums) but for years now I've been developing a love for scratching, like grandmaster flash, dxm, mix master mike, I think u get the style I mean, and now I've had enuf of waiting and want to start doing it my self,I'm not starting dj'ing to play clubs or that(never know in the future thou) more so for my own pleasure.I want the most practical for what I want to do, which from what I've read vinyl is best for scratching, but I don't really want to be shelling out for dozens and dozens of vinyls, but is it possible to get the same sound from a cdj?I'm planing to spend around $1500 maxAny advice would be appreciated Thanks
pulsebeat
Nothing ever beats Vinyl scratchingthat said you should look into buying a vinyl setup(2 turntables and mixer) then buying serato or traktor scratch.. both have cons and pros but both allows you to use vinyl and not have top buy hundreds of vinyl
eggssell
hey man. if you scratching you dont really need to many records. a handful of battle records and you can scratch yerself silly. then maybe even grab just a handful of break, dnb, dubstep, rnb or hip hop and scratch over that with yer battle record.but in terms of equip. $1500 is plenty. you can usually get 2 second hand tt's for less than $1000 (check the buy and sell raptor is selling two techy right now). then buy a cheap 2 channel mixer. any of the numarks or second hand stantons will do.and youll prob still have enuff left over to buy a ton of records.eventually if you want to move onto mixing, and dont want to sink in to records , esp. if you already have a large selection of music on cd's and digitally you can buy a DVS (scratch live, traktor scratch pro, mix vibes). but they will need a laptop. eggssell
oh and i forgot to mention. the old school djers just grabbed old blues, funk and disco records. which you can score for dirt cheap at record fairs, those dingy second hand book stores across from nearly all record stations.many hip hop djs (especially paying for breakers and rappers) dont actually play the club, chart, rnb music that people think. they play funk and soul tracks and just extend the breaks, or do loops, echos and basically remix it live. dj mathematic was killing it at the hip hop fest at redfern earlier this year.
