LabRat Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 it seems to me that you dont need to know how to mix anymore. all the fancy loops and intricate cuts to fader smashing and beat juggling seem to be an art only seen on YouTube... so let the question be asked, is the technical / traditional dj a dying breed? Cupe Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 well i'm too pov to upgrade from what i've gotso mixing with vinyl + ear is all i can do Quote
Cupe Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 yea of course. im glad i started where i did in the industryi can walk up to a pair of vinyl decks and manually beatmix and scratch without headphones and without a problemi expect with all the automation and bells/whistles it wouldn't take me long before i rip the same level of leet up on cdj's Quote
legunner Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 i find it hard to use vinyls but i can easily mix with traktor scratch pro. this may just be my limited experience or my lack of having decent records to mix with. Quote
LabRat Posted May 14, 2011 Author Posted May 14, 2011 i'm not point the finger at these dj programs (directly). if you're using it as an easier way to store your music then so be it. i have accepted this (after 3 years lol) as your personal choice. however, its when some fuck head loser face can score a set / residency after a year of "mixing" on his stolen version of Trakor or Serato and all mp3's are in "sync mode"i have always respected anyone that has taken the time to learn and who is still willing to learn! i respect anyone who like to mix "outside-the-box" and go fucking crazy during their sets! this new wave of dj's are really starting to piss me offanyone up for DJ's Unite - a night full of scratching, live mashups and wild uses of effects? chrismak Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 These loser heads you speak of won't last too long. Their interest will soon fade if they lack passion and a genuine sense of accomplishment. Its like typing in cheat codes into video games. Its fun at first but then gets boring real quick. Quote

Ableton/similar DJs who use sync but add own flava may become a breed on their own but technical/skilled DJs using platters will still be around, even if they are using midi-controllers as platters. The sound of juggling/scratching etc cannot be emulated by machine anymore than the sound of an incredible shredding guitar solo. Even though it may come in and out of fashion it's here to stay IMO Quote
LabRat Posted May 14, 2011 Author Posted May 14, 2011 see this is true for about 90% of them. the other, somewhat "dedicated" 10% somehow score a set and take off. good on em, but where are the mixing skills at? makes me think, i got asked by a promoter if i played top 40 and i said no. now i'm thinking, i shouldve said yes and just grabbed a bunch of total hits comps and just crossfaded from one tune to the other for 6hrs Quote
Cupe Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 There's making musicAnd there's the music making business Quote
Jaz Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 i was thinking about something similar but a little more minor the other day...i was thinking how i dont like that new CDJ's have qauntizes loops....i recon your should have to set the loops manually and practise till you get it right...not press 1 button and have a perfect 4 bar loop everytime...shit is getting lazy... Quote
eggssell Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 loops are lazy. what happened to rocking doubles, and doing the 5 second backspin to create loops.and who said cdj's arent cheating Quote
LabRat Posted May 15, 2011 Author Posted May 15, 2011 i use cdjs just to play the music. if i want to loop something then i'll use the technology on there and try match the loops as fast as i can. the modern day dj is becoming quite the lazy one Quote
eggssell Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 wait but isnt that being hypocritical. you say modern dj is becoming lazy yet use technology to do loops because its easier?anyways i was just being a dick. its just we know it already. people who use turntables bust on cdj users who bust on midi guys who bust on vdj and so on .every new gen is gonna do something that makes things easier. and ther will be an elite few who will hate on you for it.what i find funny is how some technological advances are acceptable and others arent (like looping) even though it makes things easier.when someone asks how do mix in a song with an intro not long enuff, everyone says just go and extend it yourself using a software program. and thats accepatble.(?) thats cheating isnt it. you use to have to use the instrumental in the bridge, or the outro, and then quickly load up the same song on the other deck and mix into the beginning.so i just dont understand why somethings are cheating while somethings are technological advancements. but yeah its all rhetorical no need to answer cuz i dont think there is one. LabRat Posted May 15, 2011 Author Posted May 15, 2011 wait but isnt that being hypocritical. you say modern dj is becoming lazy yet use technology to do loops because its easier?kinda... i dont use any form of loop feature / function while playing out. house parties i have a bit of a play around with a few features so if that counts then yeah, i count myself as a hypocrite i guess Quote
eggssell Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 i aint having a go, its all good. do what you do mann Quote
andyman Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 People are always going to have their opinions over whether the "traditional" or "technical" DJ is better.I personally don't give a damn, as long as the techno is set to raging. Quote
legunner Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 i use auto loops, hot cues, and when im slizzered the sync button(have it set to match tempos not actually syncing but kind is). who cares i know how to dj without them but why would i when using them makes my set sound better Quote
Gandy Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 i hate faggots that use sync, if your going to use something to easily sort your music use rekordbox, else just use usb and plug it directly into the cdj and actually (gasp!) manually sort it yourself Quote
djarmed Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 i find it hard to use vinyls but i can easily mix with traktor scratch pro. this may just be my limited experience or my lack of having decent records to mix with.or it could be that auto sync button Quote
