Codes is a producer/ dj from Brooklyn, New York who recently dropped his EP Codes House (available at beatport or itunes), which contains five sure fire hits. Having a fat disco sound with that hint of old school house.

Codes was already known in the Brooklyn dubstep scene as the Dj Code-D, then last December he released the very pumping fat funky mix, Around the house in 80 minutes, which not only contained tracks from his EP but it also announced his arrival on the Slow Roast roll call.

Codes has very generously agreed to give up some of his time and answer a few q's.

So first up tell us about Darkroom, which is about to have its two year anniversary i see. what it is? how you got involved? your current involvement? we have a few dubstep producers/ fans on the forum.

Darkroom is Brooklyn's premier dubstep monthly party. I was brought on board a little over a year ago as a resident. I was making electro house and dubstep for The American Dream Team, at the time, and now I go by Code-D for the more bassier stuff I produce.

i first came across you on either the slow roast blog or fools gold blog with the Around the house in 80 minutes mix and being a massive fan of disco, i totally rocked out to it. and much like your release it had a very disco/ funk/ house sound. very different to the dubstep of your residency. How did this change up come about? and do you playout anywhere with this sound?

Well I was actually making house music first and was producing tracks that were more on the electro side of things under the moniker The American Dream Team or TADT which was a crew that I started in 2008. I dabble in all genres of music and around 2009 dubstep was really taking off and I began producing dubstep for fun. The Codes project, which I started last December, came out of my original love for house and creatively flipping samples. It's my main passion and I decided to circle back and focus on it. Both identities are enjoyable to make music for and I'm trying to keep DJ Code-D as more dubstep focused and Codes as more house roots.

So you are on the Craze & Kill the Noise helmed Slow Roast label (http://slowroastrecs.com). how did that come together?

Well, I've known Kill The Noise for a long time. I think it was when KTN sent my "Dying" track to Craze that really pushed forward the initial interest. I was going by The American Dream Team and back then the track was actually called "Dying 2 Be Dancing". They both loved the record and pretty much said give us more so I did a few more records which eventually came together as the EP. The sound was what I was digging at the time it seemed appropriate to just create "Codes". It was like starting over again but focusing on a sound that's more me.

Craze gets lots of love on the forum here, and i've been doing just as much promoting on the forum for Klevers EP (avail on beatport and itunes) as I have for yours. how is it being on a label with these guys, and working with these guys (as well as the others)? have you been on any of the slow roast tours? Have you got to dj at any of the events? i always see the posters for them and think damn i got to get to the US for one of these jams.

Hey man I really appreciate the support! It's great because I have always been involved in the dance music scene and the turntablism scene so it was a perfect fit to join Slow Roast. I grew up looking up to Craze & Klever so I couldn't really ask for a better team to be a part of. Hopefully we can do a global Slow Roast Tour soon so we can bring the crew to Australia. =)

You obviously have diverse musical tastes. What made you get into djing/ production in the first place? who are some of your musical influences? what are some of the big tracks that you really loved coming up?

Hmm. Well, when I was 14 I went to a rave and bought a random mixtape by DJ Venom. It was old school jungle classic stuff from around 97 with all kinds of scratching in it. That mixtape was definitely the reason why I was like "yo I want to do this" and eventually saved up for my first pair of turntables. I like all kinds of music so my musical influences are kind of all over the place. I love me some Jimi Hendrix or Black Sabbath and dance music wise I would have to say Armand Van Helden and DJ Zinc are two of my favorite producers. For my favorite big tracks I loved growing up I would have to say Double 99's "Rip Groove" and Dom & Roland's "Filter Fury".

what tracks or artists are you feeling right now?

Right now I'm really feeling the Nom De Strip remix of the Nightriders record "Hey" and I think Dario Nunez makes some really cool house with big latin drums. Flinch is also making some great dubstep. His Remix for "What You Gonna Do" is huge and will be out later this year.

do you know many australian artists, and what do you think of their music? anything on the cards for you to get out to australia?

I don't know that many Australian electronic artists except for Men At Work and their track land down under, always a banger, jk. But I do know Australia has a great electronic music scene and I really dig that. I also want to make an effort to get to know more heads overseas, particularly in Australia and it's definitely on my list as a place to play at soon.

so the codeshouse EP has dropped. and seems to be getting some good traction. whats going on currently for you and for the rest of 2011; producing, touring, djing, resting?

Right now I have a couple remixes I just finished up. One for Stretch Armstrong's Plant Music Label and another for Kill The Noise. I also have been working with Treasure Fingers and am gonna try and finish up a new EP of my own. Lining up some summer tours now and def too much music to be made to have time for rest.

now for the geek questions. what are your weapons of choice when djing?

1200's, Pioneer 909 or 800 and Serato

what are you using for production?

Logic 9 and an Apogee Duet
