How much should i expect to pay?

My rough guess would be somewhere around;

400-550 for a good condition DJM400

550-650 each for good condition CDJ850's

Im sure if you look around you may be able to find a good deal. Alot of the people selling their DJ equipment expect too much IMO, you always need to negotiate with them otherwise you will end up paying only $100 or so less than than full retail price.

if these are new and if retail works the same in oz as in uk check this:

i used to work in a shop selling dj gear... they have a mark up on every unit but they follow a policy that measn they only need to make the mark up profit on one unit per sale.

Although they are trying to get a profit on every piece of kit sold they actually normally settle for a profit for each sale made which means: if you can barter and barter with them you can often beat the price down so you pay the equivalent of full retail price for one unit but cost price on the other two units in the set up.

This works especially well on dj setups at large retailers, small independent shops wont work this way.

If this aint happening where you are at the very least if you buy a full dj set up (2 dex and mixer) you should expect a set of headphones and a 4-way power extension plus audio out cable thrown in free.

Djim. They also do volume rebates here so it's not as simple a calc. They might pay $500 a unit but if they sell a hundred they get $x back. If you are lucky enough to walk in near the end of the rebate period and they're just short of target you can get below the invoice figure.

Until a couple of months ago I was support manager for the company that did pioneers sale system. The retail margins on cdjs and djm's is very tight, really those volume rebates are what the bigger dj shops are chasing.

^ aye, tis true here. But from a shopfloor POV the rule of thumb was a percent per sale not per unit. Worth knowing both facts for anyone shoppping though.

also pioneer are being v tight here too: the only shop in uk willing to unpack the new pioneer controllers for demo is HTFR in birmingham. Everyone else is saying the profit margins are too small for them to risk having to sell one ex-demo.

perhaps a new thread on tips when buying gear? is there one already?
