hey guys, I have a 7hr gig next month and so far onyl 5.5 hours of music in my playlist (not a static playlist) and was wondering any dance songs you would sugest? I have most of the mainstream ones

dude 7 hours is harrrrrd, ive done 6 hours non stop without a piss break at a party and that shit could kill a man

i suggest you get the last 5-6 Ministry of Sound Compilations and pick out the good songs if your doing a party for 16-19 years olds, that will go down well

other then that, if most of the party goes have you on facebook just write a status saying "what song would you like to here at bobs party" and that can build you up some stuff as well...

yeah mate, like the others said: a bit of ministry compilation might come in handy. or "now thats what I call music" if you get those?

if it starts at 7 i guess you're expecting them to have some food? maybe some present giving/pinata/ party game nonsense?

dont think you have to keep the music pumping in these bits. check with the client but my guess would be vary it up during any dif parts of the eve. And if they are doing food get a bellyfull.

Save your killers for later when all are getting up for it, about half hour to an hour after any food has been served is normally long enough for folk to think about jumping around again.

but dont leave your killers too late, by 2am i would guess you'll be playing slow songs for lovers, air guitar for the ripped boys and some sing along fun for the girls. At a 16th it doesn't have to be dance music all night, hence the pop compilations too.

Last bit of advice which hopefully goes without saying: if a pretty girl asks for a request - play it.

good luck guy

one question is there going to be alcohol? cause if so the party will definitely not last till 3am. if theres alcohol play your banging tracks at like 11-12 when people are in the prime.. or even earlier for 16 year olds?

all those are radio edits, so don't think about mixing them together... just flick the fader across and bang in the next tune. It's a 16th, no one is going to notice.

ooooo, never figured you for that lloyd!

i would say feel free to try and mix, it doesnt have to be a 2minute beatmatch with dropins, eq, fx etc. But pitch them close, cut them nice (end of chorus to beginning of nxt songs verse, or end of break to next songs big intro sound etc), or beatmatch where an intro beat lasts 4 bars and it's gonna be easy.

Pop tunes are a challenge but a dj adds energy to a party by putting energy in, especially when the songs wont do the work for him.

Golden rule: the headphones are there for you to prepare and practise in. You may only have 3 min during a song to pick and prep the next one but try shit out in your cans, if it aint going to work revert to lloyds advice, if it's worth a go try it. The punters only hear what you let them hear remember.

Just watch the best dancers and if they kept going you did well.

have a go at home playlisting big songs together with a few cut points in mind to join them all together, if you're gettig no inspiration: the recognisable riff is a good place to cut to coz a lot of young kids (5 - 99) only dance if they know who is singing so they want to recognise the track str8 away.

dude these sets are really good, keep a keen eye out on the crowd, and play to them, because your there for so long you will pick up on so much, just observe,

most people arent too fussed about how good you mix at parties like that but what tracks you play,

you keep them engaged they will forgive you for a few slip ups.

you have seven hours make it a educational seven hours

Every gig you will learn something new, you can practice as much as you want in the bedroom but there is nothing like playin to a crowd, soon as you get happy faces and people lovin ur tracks no better feeling ha ha

dont forget its a 16th, you can usually repeat tracks.

i think i mentioned before at one of our house parties we had technotronic move this played about ten times. crowd just kept shouting "rewind"

Play what they wanna hear.

At a 21st last year I played Benny Benassi - Satisfaction 8 times, and Dada Life - Just Bleep Me 6 times.

THATS 14 OF ESSENTIALLY THE SAME SONG.

But yeah, have fun with it.

And drop this.

Every time I've played it, it goes off.

think about when you were a kid (ok, maybe your age, this makes me feel old) you would buy a single, and listen to it over and over and over and over and over again.... the same song.

So andy and everyone else is right, just play the top 40's, maybe throw in a few remix's to mix it up, but yea.... don't be afraid to replay songs if that's what they want.... at the end of the day, they are paying you to play what THEY want

also a little tip, get a song and then find 2 or 3 remixes of it then mix them all together

for example: Calvin harris im not alone

First start off with the deadmau5 mix to build it up then introduce the hook n sling version then drop the main line from the original track.. makes for a cool sounding mix :)
