Robsta
So it's been awhile since I last posted on these forums and during that time I've bought a Traktor Kontrol S4 and have been playing around with it non-stop. I've decided that I absolutley love DJing and I want to continue. I have a few questions though before I start on my quest to fame. What is the BEST program(s) for making music. I want to make my own music and use that music I make for mixes during live performances. From what I gather from Traktor (I might be completely wrong) is that Traktor is used as a live tool rather than a program for making music. I want a program that has all the features you could need and has some ease of use aspect. How do I get gigs/become noticed? I'm wondering how most of the full time DJs on this forum started out in regards to getting gigs/shows. At the moment I'm 16 turning 17 so I know I'm probably limited in what I can do for a year or so but any pointers or tips would be great! Is it better to specialize in one genre of music or is it better to be open and offer different things? I personally love every form of electronic music. Whether it be happy asian techno to Glitchpop. With that being said however, the music I most enjoy is dubstep and House/Progressive House. Would it be better to specialise in one of these or play a variety or different music? What Laptop is good to use? I'm wondering what aspects are required for a good DJ Laptop. If anyone says Apple I will murder you. Thanks a lot guys! :assault:
JonnyB
some programs that are soely for producing music areLogic ProFL Studio'sAbelton live(also for live performances but great for producing as well)ReasonAcid Pro + a few othersas far as gigs go the 2 main things are networking and a mixtape.start talking to heaps of promoters other dj's and what not, send out mixtapes to those people and other peope that can give you gigs. research a bit on the club and make sure its where you want to play.as for playing heaps of genre's or just 1 you will have to become fluint in a few similar genre's. E.G if you played at an electro club youd have to know how to play disco incase you opened the night, ghetto party/upbeat dance for the set after that before you can really start banging your electro out.but if you plan on making music and sart getting hired for the music you make, just say you make dubstep and you rock up to a show and start playing prog house, peoples are going to be pissed off because they expected dubstep etc etc.yeah Macbook is pretty much king dude, dont fight it. Robsta
I dont see the appeal in a MacBook. For that price you could get a non-apple pc with 100x better specs. Or is it to do with the apple operating system being better than windows in terms of music?
JonnyB
its way better as far as i know, ive had my scond hand mac for 2 years and have not had a single problem with it, hasnt costed me a single cent, no having to buy anti virus software etc etc.they are more expensive for a reason yo thats not to say PC are shit, im sure they also do great, i just prefer the mac

I believe mac does this better than windows based laptops.

lloydc
There is that dodgy virtual booting to run FL studio in Mac.you'd actually be running it in windows...fuck FL studio programmers are dumb, they'd sell shit loads more copies if it were available for OSX.anyway, back on topic.OSX>windows

I was going to do it on another laptop running vista, but never got around to it.
DJAdumbration
Main implication on getting OSX to run on non-crApple hardware is in the type of BIOS (or UEFI, in OSX case) that it supports. You need to find a MOBO with UEFI. If you use a mobo with BIOS, it's a bit trickier to install OSX. BIOS/UEFI sits between the OS and the hardware and basically passes messages between the two. BIOS has been around since the dawn on time and has recently been replaced by UEFI that is more expandable. OSX by default requires UEFI whereas Windows will run on anything. As for why you'd spend more money on a Mac, think of Windows as a $2 hooker and OSX as a $1,000 /hr escort - they'll both do the same thing, but the escort will do a better, classier job of it and she'll be less likely to give you an infection in the process or crash out on you halfway through a "gig"
