Wav-Midi

How can i convert patches ,Loops and samples from my laptop in wav format into midi format then send them to my Roland d2 groovebox?

I know i have to invest in a usb-midi converter but what else do i need ? do i need any programs?

For your sake i hope someone proves me wrong on this but as far as i know a wav cannot become midi. Midi signals can be used to trigger wav sounds but you'd still need the wav audio somewhere, either in the groovebox to act as sample (if it does that) or in some other midi controlled sampler (eg your laptop if the software is compatible).

ready to look dumb when someone posts about a new tech... but it's all witchcraft and sorcery to me.

why dont you want to keep the sounds on your laptop? The d2 should work as the triggering device if you have some software on the laptop that is midi compatible and the midi to usb convertor. That way you keep the sounds you have?

What software did you use to make the loops etc?

eezee djim,im from london now living in melbourne been here for 18 months

I dont have the samples yet but a friend has loads that he is gonna give me and the d2 has a spare bank to store extra samples so i thought would use that.I have just aquired another laptop that im gonna be using in my studio so im gonna be putting on reasons and ableton live.i dont have a usb to midi converter im just trying to work out what i need before purchasing everything.

considering your set up my advice ould be: if the d2 has space for audio put the loops etc str8 in there, if not keep them on the laptop in ableton and use the d2 as a midi triggering device?

I used to use an old m-audio ozone audio interface with midi to get my akai mpc to talk to ableton, it worked well. Sold the akai in the end and now just use ableton with the ozone.

me and fam are seriously considering emmigrating, any advice mate?

Im trying to do this on a budget so cant be investing in loads more gear.i may invest in a midi keyboard thats all.

My advise is emmigrate this place is far better then the uk.

get a roland sp 404 sampler..

I'v seen them go cheep on e-bay... $250..

the audio from the D2 groovebox go's into the 404 sampler inputs ,& the outputs go to your P.A ( P.C free..all hardware )

the midi output from d2 go's to the midi input on the 404..

now you can sequence all your loops & samples with all the cool patten on the d2 using midi clock

and because your d2 is setup as the master midi device...you might be able to midi map the 29 EFX's on the 404 to the X-Y touch screen on the D2

32 gig s.d card good for about 96 hours off audio

urr i may be wrong but if you've got a laptop with ableton on and you want to use the d2 as your triggering device all you need is that midi to usb convertor you mentioned at beginning, but converting midi from d2 to usb, not wav to midi.

A midi keyboard/audio interface would sort it right out? I used to use a m-audio ozone, not usre what is available now but you plug your midi in it, and it via usb to your laptop. much cheaper and simpler than an sp404 if you've already got the laptop?

BTW: cheers for the news about melbourne, i've lived in queensland b4 and know the people are righteous, need to be sure i can earn down there tho as have 2 bin lids now.

its not cheeper when you add the price off Ableton & a good sound card & a cheep midi keyboard

the roland D2 groovebox would be no good for controlling ableton any way...you need faders , knobs & way more buttons than the d2 got

the thing that the roland D2 is good at is midi patten sequencing with all the cool roland sounds

fair nuff wazza, i thought the lad had ableton already but also i just checked what the d2 was, they're discontinued in uk but i do remember them... quite a nice toy really, if you like roland sounds... but your right, pointless with ableton.

i dj, and teach dj skills in schools, prisons and for kids with learning issues and the like. there's a whole explantion on the thread about work/monies somewhere on here.

i know there's no point landing in another country expecting to get gigs str8 away without a rep so figure i'll have to concentrate on the teaching side of my business 1st. That's why I'm trying to find out if oz govt supplies funding for those sort of activities down under...any contacts etc well appreciated. the cuts are biting big time here now.

p.s. you may want to repost a new topic somewhere else regarding the best way to hook your d2 to ableton and your new sounds. the "wav-midi" title is a bit misleading about what you are really wanting to do and there are many more headz here that could give serious tips... list the gear you already have and the style of music you aim to make then ask how best to get it all working maybe?

oh yeah djim diplos mad decent label do a thing here called heaps decent. i guess its their charity arm. but yeah they organise events in detention centres, poorer areas and the like. nina las vegas (a dj who has a reg spot on the triple j radio station) is the face of it here. not sure if they pay people or if its all volunteers but could be worth checking.
