AUSTRALIAN DJ FORUMS

ok, I debated what I should call this this thread, but allow me to describe what i'm on about.

I was chilling at a friend's place tonight and i played a mix that i've heard recently off soundcloud. The mix in question claims to have 100 tracks (i haven't counted them) in a 1 hour mix. The people i was with liked the songs all the songs, however they found it was really annoying because you only got to hear 30s-1M of any given song.

I'm in two minds on this topic, because I really respect what the DJ has done from a technical perspective, however I can understand what my friends (and the average punter) are on about when it comes to mixes in this fashion.

There was a similar situation at a well known bar/club in sydney, where the DJ was doing the same thing, and the same friends had made the same observation.

I'd like to know the thoughts of others, especially from a DJ's perspective, on this particular style of mixing.

for reference, this is the mix I am speaking of

technically, its awesome! i've crammed a heap of songs into a short time and when you get it right it sounds awesome - however, it doesnt really matter because at the end of the day, if you're playing at a club and you're mashing all these tunes up, people wont care because they don't know whats really going on. worst thing to do is mash up cheese. 90% of people digg that shit so if you start fucking around with it by chopping and changing all the time they will eventually get sick of you and bail off the dance floor.

i dnt think these sorts of mixes are ment to be purley for club value but instead they represent the djs producing tallents and show that they can play such a wode variety of tunes making them worthy off booking at your venue

Great way to show off your skills...and clear the dance floor. Just as the punter recognises the song and prepares to dance, it changes. Although adding in a few quick snippets of a song as a 'teaser' of whats to come is great if done properly.

haha you'd be surprised source raver, pop crowds have a very short attention span.

they tend to go nuts for lots of stuff they know.

I've watched a mate (successful R&B dj) spin on many occasions, he's golden rules 16 beat mixes and mix out before the song is half way though... plenty of screaming girls there :P

the truth is the POP crowd (eleco, Ministy, R&B ) all want to hear the best bit of the songs they know and they really dont care if you can mix for 32 bars straight.

i only just saw what mix you were talking about, smokin joe is a great example of a dj that pulls this off, ive worked with him quit a bit and know he can pull this style of mixing off with great effect on the dance floor

I think the bloke is very skilled, judging by that mix.

is he a DVS user?

he played in newcastle saturday night and i've played before him at le panic when he plays out he doesn't mash so much into his sets...think this is more for people just listening at home who dont wanna sit threw all the songs but wanna hear a good mix.......i have also never seen a dj with as much energy!
