chrismak
just for clarity actual djing does not involve a laptop... get some 350's and a 2 channel mixer and use cd'sthey used to say this:"just for clarity actual djing does not involve a cd player... get some 1200's and a 2 channel mixer and use vinyl"Remember the OP wants to DJ for fun and friends and said nothing about club gigs. The Traktor S4 with an existing laptop is nothing to sneeze at.

mattus123
is there any reason why no one has suggested Denons?maybe look at the DNS700http://www.djwarehouse.com.au/denon-dns ... layer.htmlthey are withing your budget, and leaves enough left over money for a mixer
Funky_Steve
Best advise I could give would be to go visit a few DJ stores and check out what's available. Try as many systems out as you can. Talk to the sales people who usually are DJs themselves or know all the techy stuff about the gear. You may be surprised at what you personally like compared to what others have provided an opinion on.After all, you're the one who has to learn to use it and feel comfortable with it. And then if you out-grow the system, upgrade further down the track.
eggssell
lloyd i am assuming that you will still need to beatgrid all your tracks. im pretty sure traktor hasnt advanced itself that much.autogrid works 90% of the time though, it just has to let it scan for a few seconds prior to playing the track.does serato require scanning/analysing as well?do you really think it works 90% of the time? maybe its different with different genres. while i beatmatch thru the headphones, i do rely on traktor to label the bpm's so i can sort by bpm and hence make it easier to select songs from my collection while mixing on the fly (much like labeling your vinyls in the old days). i havent bothered to beatgrid yet (sounds tedious).now i know occassionally traktor cant analyse so i will use a BPM app on my iphone to fill in the BPMs.however while mixing hip hop recently, i noticed rather than saying it cant analyse it actually analyses it wrong. i automatically knew it would double some (i.e. show 160 or 180 when its actually 80 or 90), but i have come across tracks where it just had a random number (like 95 when it is 90; or 86 when its 93-4). which would totally stuff me up cuz ill grab a track while mixing thinking i can pitch down or up by a bit then i end up pitching it by heaps so it sounds stupid, then have to quickly search for a new song!!!so yesterday spent sometime manually bpming heaps of my tracks. oh well just like the old days i guess!
