eggssell
heyup. as i have mentioned on here i was thanking of getting FL studio to mess about it.i know its not rated in the dance world, but ive seen how 9th Wonder uses it to sample an entire track from vinyl. and then chop it up to make his own song. and then add other elements (horns, keys, drums which he had sampled off other vinyls). so i thought its alright.for now i dont think ill be making my own songs from scratch just re-edits and remixes (dont think im creative enuff to start from scratch).anywho, was over my lil bro's who's moved back to syd after living in melbourne and he has some shyte in boxes which he doesnt think he'll unpack at his new place (plus his got a new baby so wont lkely get to use much anymore). which included an m-box with Pro Tools and possibly a midi keyboard. now ive searched the internets, i went to a book store and read a handful of pro tool books, and then you tubed, and still not sure i understand.1. can i sample an entire track in pro tools and then remix it, maybe add some new sounds which are other samples tweaked/ filtered/ effected? or is pro tools really just a virtual mixing desk in the studio sense of mixing (you know levels and shyte..).OR as some places are saying if you want to make beats get reason or live or FL and then bring it into Pro Tools to bring it all together. is that right??OR should i just forget Pro Tools and save for FL, Live or Reason?2. also ive been reading a few issues of computer music, can i get away with using the free plugins/ virtual synths on their dvd with Pro Tools until i can actually afford something.im still gonna focus on djing and making mixtapes hence this is something of an aside hence not trying to spend so much (not to mention not having any cash to spend). while i know if i dont give it time i cant expect to be making bangers, i guess i just want to see if the ideas i hear in my head can actually be put down.cheers for any help
JonnyB
well Pro Tools is a DAW so will be able to do basically anything FL live or logic will be able to doi think its just the way its layed out compared to other daw's like FL which is the Major diffrence. all yu need to sample a track and make your own track/remix from it is a Sampler (you can use audacity for this if Pro Tools does not have its own built in sampler.although ive had no experience with pro tools, i found Fl great to understand as a noob.and as you said FL isnt rated in the dance music world, tbh i think its a load of shit. i mean sure its not as professional as others. but if people like laidback luke can produce the music he does in it, that alone shuold be enough to shut the mouths of the nay sayersand as for the synthesizers there is plenty of legal free synth's around that are great to use for make basslines! eggssell
cool. well i might grab it off him to see if i can be assed or be good enuff to stick w the production thang. cuz i know it aint easy. and at least it means i dont need to spend anything for now. wonder what else i can score he he . he had a good little studio going. full kit drums, electric drum kit, a les paul replica, that midi keyboard and who knows what else. ChevChelios
pro tools is definately a studio recording based daw, I just started learning it at school so I might be able to help you here and there, but yeah, its kind of a bitch to move audio around quickly as far as getting it from your HD to the arrange, definately not made for MIDI programming, but that said I know I couple of people in the dubstep world using it so it is possible, but its just not dance music friendly yah knowz, but its free so have a stab, going in with no other DAW experience will be an advantage
eggssell
yeah cool will hit at ya if i have any q's. yeah i assume he was using it for recording guitar and banging out beats with his electroc drum kit. i just remembered at the end of this roc raida dvd i got he plugs a turnie into his sound card and starts creating beats on pro tools by "drumming" using the turntables and creating loops from sampling little cuts. now i just have to find that dvd amongst my shit
eggssell
yay found the dvd, was in the pocket in the back of the passenger seat.its awesome. he basically records himself using a turntable and mixer drumming a kick in the pattern he likes.pops into pro tools, picks his best bars then copies and pastes.then he grabs a high hat from a vinyl and while the kick he just layed is playing, starts drumming the hihats again only using the turntable and mixer. then goes thru what he recorded to find the best bar then copies and pastes that.then finds a guitar part on a track, and does the same thing i.e while what he has already layed plays, he "guitars" using the turntable and mixer.then when he has layered enuff. he puts scratches over the top last.thats how you make the beat build bitch

eggssell
nice. never seen the full set of that. on sunglasses is a must its only a snippet ( though maybe the full thing was in the features). some of the comments were funny freaking internet beehatches. yeah that was still very turntabliststy. roc raidas was more making a minimal beat to rap, scrath or dance too. which could be extended to make a full song if you could be assed to add enuff layers.
