Hey guys,

just wondering as to how to get started in a dj company? as i am looking around for gigs, and thought this might be the best option to start out.

So if you'd be able to let us know of any ideas :) of any companies and how to get into them, in particular in perth, that would be wonderful :D

Cheers

Im not sure of any company names in your area

but as for getting into 1, just approach them like you would any other job, you wont really need a resume just be friendly :)

but most of us recommend going solo for mobile DJing if you can because some (not all) DJ company's are there solely for major profits for them...not you, and also they some dont really give you DJ gear to work with + if your on your own, you get all the pay, decide the times and music etc

eg, we've heard story's here of DJ's working for DJ company's and getting $20 an hour while the company gets $100 and hour for you doing all the work, also gear story's like your given 2 CD walkmans with a crossfader box to DJ with....

not trying to scare you from it, just saying be careful of the company...

Do your research.

If you go to any functions where there's a DJ company working, go up and talk to the DJ. If he/she's an employee, ask what they're like to work for. If he/she's the boss ask about job opportunities.

Or if you know of any companies that have regular gigs in a pub or club do the above as well.

If you're new to it all but have a keen interest in getting work, working for a company could be a great way to start in the industry.

i think there could be some advantages of working for a company to start with. I guess you could kind of think of it as a trade... you could start with a company to practice and learn everything, then when you feel confident, go out on your own.

one of the advantages i could see with a company is they may have more contacts to start off than you to get gigs/gear etc. So just use them to make your own contacts and get experience and move on when you are ready.

I was where you are about 18 months ago.

I started doing a few jobs for a company to get my experience up. I was lucky in that he paid me fairly well and let me use his equipment.

It doesn't hurt to phone through some names in the yellow pages. Tell them you are new, looking to learn. You never know unless you ask!

Practice as much as you can and tell everyone what you are doing. Everyone wants music at their event, tell them will do the djing for free if they hire you some gear?

Just have a go I reckon! Good luck!

start off doing friends parties.then you dont have to worry about all the fancy gear and crap. first learn how to read the crowd. if that means just choosing the songs off an ipod to play next so be it.
