andyman Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 So I'm guessing quite a few of you have done the whole 18th/21st thing.Does anyone here have any disaster stories?I played a 21st a couple of months back. Worst crowd I've ever seen. Was forced to play Benny Benassi - Satisfaction by the birthday girl 8 times, as well as Dada Life - Just Bleep Me another 4.And just to top it off, my MIDI controller got covered in vodka raspberry.Share your stories! CBG Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 lol at least she wanted dance music.Only ever did one 21st, then i went straight to clubs.I did do a 21st at a club though, but made a mate do the first few hrs/ Quote
andyman Posted November 19, 2010 Author Posted November 19, 2010 Admittedly, yes it was dance music, however that was as far as her knowledge of the genre went. Quote
Jaz Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Ive got a few, similar to yours andy, grog on my gear, having to play shit songsbut thats Mobile DJing for you man, gotta give what the party wants...My Rant the night after a gig, couple of weeks agohttp://www.ausdjforums.com/modules.php? ... pic&t=3950 Quote
eggssell Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 at a house party (which we use to hold all the time, and i notice kids dont do that anymore...) we played the same technotronic about 10 times. got the floor going each and every time ha ha. i cant even remember which track Quote
JonnyB Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 i remember playing 1 21st and the dudes sister(in the year below me at school) would not stop hassling me for Tik Tok by some pop singer and she was so pissed she could barely speak..'I DONT FUCKING HAVE IT''COME ON JUST PLAY IT'*please just fuck off*in the end a fight broke out, birthday boy got king hit and we got to finish up early, best thing that happened all night.i now only play best mates parties because we know everyone and play what ever we want...and if a mate asks me to play something i dont want i just say go get a cd and you can play for a bit haha.mobile djing can go to hell in my books. dont understand it, dj's play music they dont like, and the party could save money by burning the music they want on to cd's and using a stereo.i guess there ia always the novelty of haveing a 'dj at your party' Quote
eggssell Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 thats what i mean. for us it use to be the holder of the party would ring up a hire place, get 2 turnies and some lights then anyone brave enuff (usually me and one of my holmies) would show up with a crate or 4 of vinyl and just play whatever. people would usually take turns doing about an hour behind the decks, or occassionally youd get someone get all dedicated and stay behind for a longer time.but once we left school all these kids started buying cd player/ mixer thangs and the whole renting of turnies and community djing went out the window, cuz these peeps obviously wanted to be the only ones to mix all night.on the other hand though, i see how weddings and corporates need the mobile dj. LabRat Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 i've given up on the whole "18th/21st" thing. everyone keeps saying the same shit. i dont mind a few requests at these things but when everyone says "play something we can dance to" and "i dont think you should be playing this"... i say, if you can do a better job then me then fucking do it! recently, i was playing some chilled / bassey dubstep before people started to rock up - just chilled beats as people started to come in so they could meet their mates and have a drink etc... a few people rocked up (not the whole guest list) and one chick comes up to me and asks what i was playing. i said "dubstep" and she goes "well, i think its shit and you shudnt be playing it. you should be playing something we can dance too. something with a beat"cut a long story short, i hate being told how to do my job, especially how to mix a few tunes together by a bunch of drunk, clueless dipshits. just to add to this thread, i have a question... has anyone tried to leave from a gig but forced to stay and keep playing beyond your time? i had that last week :S Quote
Jaz Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 i say, if you can do a better job then me then fucking do it! i would never give them that choice, they already try touch the platters n shit Quote

Jaz Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 just to add to this thread, i have a question... has anyone tried to leave from a gig but forced to stay and keep playing beyond your time? i had that last week :Si always drop the music to half level real quick and yell "last half hour guys what do u wanna hear?" i no its a death sentence asking for requests but it keeps em happy for the last bit and they understand when u finish.... Quote
eggssell Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 isnt the last half hour for slow songs so people can get close to the targets they been working."sexual healing baby....." Quote
Funky_Steve Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 just to add to this thread, i have a question... has anyone tried to leave from a gig but forced to stay and keep playing beyond your time? i had that last week :Sits in my contract, you want extra hours, i get extra pay.Same here.If they want me to extend, it's only if I want to, if they pay me and if the venue allows it.As for the final few songs, depending on the event I get on the microphone and let them know they only have a few left then announce the start of the last song for the night when it comes up. Then as the last song finishes, I simultaniously switch off all the lighting effects.END OF NIGHT!! Quote
CBG Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 reminds me of shit it is when a festival finishes... back to reality ppl!! Quote
pill Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 actually did a wedding that went a little overtime last sat night, ended up getting home at 3 after picking the mrs up from the city on my way through (and getting hjs).however it was for a function co-ordinator at one of WA's biggest wineries so I wanted to keep on their good side normally i say to clients if it goes a little overtime i'm ok to stay but if it's more than 15 minutes i'll ask for $100-200/hour.I was at Brett Heady's (the eagles premiership player's) 40th earlier this year and didnt pack up until 4.30AM. was a good night, pretty much played the same 3 songs (no second prize, born in the usa, run to paradise) on repeat for the last 2 hours lol. plus i got to mix some hardcore for a while so that was good! FabDJ Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Solved the sub used as a table for beer glasses by putting my speaker bags on top of it. No one moved them but for speeches the fuckers started putting glasses on my dj table while they talked.Having 200 people staring at the speaker and you close behind I could not tell them to move their glasses so thinking of having no spare room on the table with a road case filling it up.Any suggestions for solving this problem? pill Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 im currently making up some pages which i will laminate which simply say "absolutely no drinks on this table" Quote
Funky_Steve Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 I have a fold up stand that I sit my console on.No extra surface for anyone to put their glasses into.Simple! Quote
dim Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 hmmmif you cant play the songs folk want when they are paying you to then you will need a day job too.do you think barmen like every drink they serve? or chefs like every dish?i work shit gigs and just put up with it coz the rate of pay leaves me able to do other things like gigs i do like for free.without needing to be a wage slave 9 to 5.re drinks near kit: i just walk up to whoever put the drink down, pick the drink up and politley put it on the floor, saying nothing, very humble but giving them a smile and a thumbs up. If the music stops while you are doing this all the better, Even in the middle of a speech yes. the more people see the more will soon recognise you are polite but will not risk electric shocks/total destruction of your gear and most folk will understand this.i must get bored of sticking my oar in soon but at least its about djing... Lurk6r Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 At an 18th some guys were playing "touch the boiling mushroom light". Needless to say one asshole decided to punch it. Music stops, I point at the guy and announce that no more music is playing until this guy leaves, except not as polite and a bit more screamy, He came back later and apologised. Nobody else touched my sh!t. Quote
andythemusician Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 ^^ Good work. Best way to send the message out to anyone else thinking of fucking with yo' shit. Quote
