In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed from the internet and not just in the US.

Update, from EFF's website: the Senate Judiciary Committee postponed the scheduled markup of the Internet censorship bill — a fantastic outcome, given that the entertainment industry and their allies in Congress had hoped this bill would be quickly approved before the Senators went home for the October recess.

will never be passed

take's away so many rites, people's freedom of speech, right to view what you want, and people willl always get around it, most likely way will be to run it off something other then WWW , or just block these governments IP's from viewing your naughty site :P

there are plenty of people smarter then "The Government" how you think hackers do this stuff? it actually quit simple to block certain IP's from viewing your site....then again they could just get a new IP but thats a hassle :P

dude there are thousands of ppl working for the governement. Plus if you actively ignore this ban, the government will take a massive shit on you.

I dont think they will take porn away, its not illegal. All those free porn site are legal, they are sponsored by porn companies.

They're talking about file sharing and torrent sites.

I would hate it, but media companies have every right to pursue this.

Could be a good thing, now everyone wont have access to free music as easy and songs will begin to be more unique.

mm fair game, i wouldnt like it either but will it ever really stop? i meen people willl always find away around it...

ok say they take away all file sharing, 1st thing i would be doing is download a youtube audio stealer, watch the video clip on youtube, it takes the audio, creates a file, wala you've got illegal music again...

and i know your thinking "they will take that program away as well" they are not going to find it in under an hour of release, shit it could take them months to stubble upon or catch wind of this program, by them thousands have people would have it, hundreds of people would be making copies....thus the Music industry is fucked again....:P

Hummm sounds like the govt is just pandering to the media companies that support them.

Might be an ambit claim like Phillip Ruddock saying family trusts wont be a way of hiding money from creditors.

Every politician and lawyer, high court judge accountant, doctor, CEO has a family trust for that reason.

It was not supported naturally, an ambit claim to show the creditors that the government was considering their situation to gain their support (votes) at the next election.

As a part programmer myself I can tell you this will fail miserably. In the online community, Websites are already out of date something called P2P networks, like nutella, Limewire, or the bittorrent protocol. These are UNBLOCKABLE and will forever continue to run.

Sure stupid sites like Pirate bay will go down, but teenage coders with too much time will just Rewrite it to a P2P protocol and then I will be out of there hands.

fuck that. I'll just keep buying music. I can buy hundreds of songs for one nights work

Plus it would all be tax deductable for u CBG

Anyone who is making an income from DJing should be able to claim a tax deduction from their music (and equipment) purchases.
