Ghostface Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 So i'm pretty new here, and to DJ'ing as a whole. Being new I don't know much about the statistics of how many people here actually DJ house parties. For anyone who does suffer house parties, do you have any tips on how to read the crowd and how to tell kids to get the fuck off your shit because it costs more than they do?Any tips or help would be, much appreciated. Cheers Quote
Jaz Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 i have done a few now, take $6000 worth of gearlet me ask you, how big are you? because i may be 6 foot but im 1 skinny motherfucker, and i dont have the biggest muscles so its hard to tell a 7 foot rock to fuck offjust gotta do it with your best interests at hand, i meen id take a punch to the eye over someone pouring a drink on my gear anyday....wouldnt you? so i if they are being a fuckwit i just try keep them away from the gear....if someone is leaning over my table towards me for a request i tend to grab there shoulder and pull them to 1 side of the table and they get the idea to walk around...and as for reading the crowd, (in my town at least) what ive found is all they want is Pop/Charts, and well known House n electro...other then that...nup dont wanna here it Quote
Gandy Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 i find a polite calm but stern asking them to watch the gear and give them a reason works a treat, humans are funny creatures, if you give them a logical reason as to why you are asking them to do something, and they understand it, you have a lot better success then just telling them to fuck off politely and same crowd here, top40 with me throwing in some electro house when i get the chance to get them moving for a couple of tracks Quote
Jaz Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 The kind of Electro i get reactions to are your old shit that actually hit the charts or everyone knowseg, listen to your heart -DHT, Show me Love - Mobin Master, everytime we touch - Cascada ... etc etcand yeh same as Gandy said, i meen if your a C**t it only takes one drunk fuck to crack the shits and poor some Rum on your Decks.... Ghostface Posted September 26, 2010 Author Posted September 26, 2010 DJaz, Luckily i'm 6ft8, 110kg (I'm not lieing to sound cool on the net, because that shits fucking pathetic) So luckily i dont have problems with kids trying to bounce with me. Unluckily i'm 18, and most parties the kids are 16-18, and being dumb smug asshole the leave there drinks on your booth, pretend to DJ (Fiddle with levels) and are always requesting Beiber. Sadly I agree with you're statement on the Top 40 Bullshit. I noticed that even whilst playing top notch deep/prog house, the dancefloor seems to be more pumping if you just chuck on something from The Annual. Quote
Gandy Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 could be worse, i could ahve to play RnB all nite (vomit) Quote
Ghostface Posted September 26, 2010 Author Posted September 26, 2010 Fuck man that's rough. I do enjoy spinning it some hip-hop/rap here and there though.Usually the likes of Wu-Tang, Big L or Biggie though. Quote
Gandy Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 youre a stronger man than me, i cant stand it Quote
Jaz Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 then you have it a bit easier then us smaller lads, you'd be a bit more intimidating at least but yeh drinks always get left on top of my table or speakers, i try to create as least space as possible (make all my gear cover my table, put my lighting n smoke machine etc on top of the speakers) does help a bitand yeh i carry alot of ministry as the annuals and clubbers guide's are pretty widely bought Quote
Ghostface Posted September 26, 2010 Author Posted September 26, 2010 R'n'B clubs I wouldn't even think about. The music, the kind of people who go there. Just plain average. Quote
Ghostface Posted September 26, 2010 Author Posted September 26, 2010 Haha DJaz it comes with it's downsides, being so tall its a long way down to the decks. Refer below:Also that party was sport themed, I don't dress like a chump for fun haha. Quote
Gandy Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 whats the weather like all the way up there Quote
Jaz Posted September 26, 2010 Posted September 26, 2010 shit i dunno how you cope with it, me being 6-6.1 i get the sorest neck/back. hows yours go? Quote
Funky_Steve Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 You need to raise your setup higher. If you plan on doing this for years, believe me it's the best piece of advice I can give. Your back will thank me.6'3 myself and had to build my own console so that I wouldn't be bending over all night. Quote
Cupe Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 fuck that ghostface, i would of mixed sitting down Quote
Buck_Choi Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 yeah true. stuff that man.. kill your back.. just get a chair and rock out Quote
krsjuan Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 yeah true. stuff that man.. kill your back.. just get a chair and rock out I must admit, I'm a bit of a sit-down dj. works a treat if youre scratching on a low setup Quote
Griffo Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 So i'm pretty new here, and to DJ'ing as a whole. CheersSitting down = lazy. If you want to read your crowd (keep them interested) At least act like you care an get into what your playing. I'd stay standing an show some enthusiasm while playing. If the crowd all start to leave the dance floor or stop dancing it's a good time to try something new ie new track / genre style. An i know requests are gay, but others do like types of music that some of us don't. I play tracks that I know 100% will be crowd pleasers even though I cannot stand them.As for drunk people trying to spill there beverages and drool all over your nice equipment. Consider the way you setup your gear. If you can, try creating a stage like setup and make it so people don't have easy access to get at everything. Being up higher or putting yourself in the corner of a room can help prevent people from coming behind your equipment and sometimes even improve the room acoustics Quote
CBG Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 my back fuckin aches after a 5hr set. do what you can to avoid that, it's the worst. And for some reason my groin does as well..?? im being serious Quote
Ghostface Posted September 27, 2010 Author Posted September 27, 2010 My back absolutely fucking kills me. It's fucking hell, but i'm too out of pocket to afford any sort expensive tables or shit to literally move my set-up higher. Any cheepskate ideas? And thanks for the advice Griffo, and I totally agree with you on the standing up business, sitting down makes you seem to un-interested, brings everyone else down. Quote

crundyy Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 just drop whales that touch your stuff Quote
Griffo Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Yea just get creative. Try build something with materials you find laying around or just use random junk. An old computer desk or table that you find on the side of the road with a bit of TLC and a black sheet thrown over the top could be perfect for a small budget Quote
