Tomy Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 i worked my fucking arse off for 2 years playing the worst and best parties all over brisbane. started off with some really dodgy club / pub gigs then found a good market out of the city and started a club night there, been working my way from there ever since. starting to get back into the thick of it after a break of just playing out of the city for a few months. so things are heating up again. plus production hopefully the new track hits the ground hard! ruggs Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 did a private party for a friend of a friend at a club and just bugged the manager to give me an hour djing there for free and he said send me a mix and he put me on Quote
CBG Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Messaged a club on facebook... about 2 months later they rang me, I was also mates with the head DJ.I have friends who are promoters (don't piss them off)Production is a great avenue, I havent made a gd track yet imo.. but Tomy has made a couple and if one of those is noticed by a club owner, they will bring him in. Its so common to headline just cus you've made one popular song. Quote
Skank Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 i approached a promoter for the gig and from that one gig i got booked for other clubs Quote

Funky_Steve Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 At one venue I was mates with the promoter so when the regular DJ moved on he offered me a spot.At another venue I originally answered a newspaper ad, went in for an interview and did a Thursday partynight to show them what I could do. From there I was offered a regular weekly gig. When new owners took over the club, they didn't give me any indication of whether they wanted the same style of music or not until the night before my scheduled night and then they said they didn't need my services anymore (thanks for the notice). So I did the rounds of a few of the clubs and caught up with a few fellow DJs that I knew. Told them of my current situation and luckily one of them was thinking of moving on so offered me his night. Still there years later. For DJs new to the scene my suggestion would be to get out there, talk to other DJs, club owners, promoters, etc and get your name out there. You never know what may drop in your lap but I can guarantee nothing will happen if you're not proactive about it. Quote
djexecute Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Cool thread, I wanna get off my ass and get a club dj spot, been mixing for house parties and for friends for like 6 years on and off lol but just always been way too busy with life and other full time work to pursue a full time residency. So do you guys recommend heading down to a club and asking if they have any spare spots? do they normally ask for a sample mixtape? I imagine it's heaps easier if you know one of the dj's there though, had a look on seek just for a laugh, and as I thought.. no jobs available cheers Quote
JonnyB Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 we were lucky.our good mates had just got themselves a resedency at candy's and me and the guy i dj with now said to each other 'if either of us get a gig in the city, we will do it as 2 people for the first few gigs just to get over the nerves hahaanyway a month or so down the track at HEAT at the bourbon(run by candy's at the time) my mate got himself a mixtape together and approuched the promotoer with a our friend that already dj'd there. i wasnt there at the time, was getting loose on the DF, but the guy said dont worry about the mixtape, ill take your friends word for it, call me on tuesday for your first gig.and it went from there and weve done every gig together since and weve just stuck together, worked our way onto music people(the booking agency) and now we are on Vamp music(the record label type thing within music people)got our first gig at chinese laundry this weekend too Quote

I've been to candys a few times, and it's always been good... might have even been you haha. I like the idea of doing the gigs as a pair too....gives you both exposure, you can get over the nerves a bit better... and you always have a mate there Quote
