Andrez
I started a label 14 years ago - have a read of the initial reasons here:http://www.myspace.com/if_recordsGOOD LUCK!!
D4Dirty
I could go for hours on this subject...I can elaborate if you wish but the short story is unless you have a lot of time, money, patients and truck loads of talented people to remix and give you tracks I wouldn't bother.Shops like beatport make it hard for small labels to get in. They don't even accept new label, you need to find a distributor AND you need to make at least $500 US a quarter. Very hard to do when you make 75 cents a download. If your only goal is to just see your tracks in the shop then that is not a good reason to start a label. Unless you have the time and money for a decent marketing plan that is not just spamming your myspace friends then your just going to see your tracks fade into the background.Theres a lot to think about, and it is very expensive. But if your passionate about showing the world new tracks from you and your mates, and passionate about giving people chances, seeking new tracks and your willing to put a lot of time and money into it then go for it! jackchapman
If you are going to start a record label, you need to know in advance who your customers are and also have an understanding about how you will engage them in your out put. These days its all about niche focus. If you can be the leader of your music niche that people look to for great music, you will do just fine. Above-DiabloTraxx
i just saw this post.. what everyone has said is true.. the most important thing is dont start a label to put ur own tunes out there.. if other labels wont sign your tunes.. they arent up to standard yet. i have my own label which i started 2.5 years ago now... its taken a long time for the tracks to get noticed.. lots of pr and networking and gaining awareness of the big boys. Also you do need money to start it as to be successful u need a combination of big name remixes along with up n comers... food for thought now for a shamelss plug my label is diablotraxx check it out on beatport, trackitdown juno etc
