You will want to build one yourself. Most externals use cheap hard drives.

I would suggest if reliability is key, ensure that you buy 'Enterprise' grade drives..

If speed is key, there are drives like the WD Velociraptor or even better, a high end Solid State Drive. (SSD's do loose capacity overn time and I can explain why if your interested).

yeah getting a ssd of 1tb.. will be way expensive LOl.

could you give me a few links to building one my self..? or an "enterprise" grade drive?

For Seagate... this is what I suggest...

CONSTELLATION ES 3.5" 7200.1 1TB

SATA, 7200 RPM, 32 CACHE

Seagate product code: ST31000524NS

Wholesale price: approx $230

External USB housing approx $30

Western Digital Enterprise drives Model:WD1003FBYX

Model: WD1002FBYS

Id suggest the first western digital one i listed personally or the seagate one.

cool ill look into them.

say i get the housing... and i put it in my bag and my bag gets thrown around.. effects..?

i know SSD's wouldnt get effected but what are the chances of it dying on me if it was in that situation ?

Not a high chance of failure, because when its ejected correctly etc... the drive "Parks" the write head" so it wont float around inside the unit and 'scratch' things etc..

Try not to do that though lol :)

for the ones you suggested according to a quick glance at the specs wouldnt the WD be better. because it has 64mb cache. ? and sure the disk fast. but how about the housing.. wouldnt it be capped to usb speed or esata plug..

if so what are the speeds on a usb2 or esata.

IDE is an old type of connector and has slower bandwidth speed. SATA is the way to go.

Esata is a fast connector on the housing, but not many computers/laptops accept that. USB will be the best bet. USB 3 is a new High speed connector which has been released and will be the hot thing in the near future, but for now USB 2.0 is the way to go.

heres one option..

Skymaster Astone SATA to USB $32

The above is just a basic housing.. nothing flash.. but its moreso the hard drive inside you have to worry about and i def agree the WD drive would be a great investment :)

Dont bother with the LAN option.. unless its a proper NAS drive, it will be crap and you will need to install software on the pcs just to see the drive.. avoid...

Nas drives YES... 'lan' on a cheap external..no

Raptor its changed a lot since then

SATA hotswap is what it says not SCSI

so you have a sata drive then its able to be used for hotswap ONLY if you have the sata hotswap card NOT the ones on a motherboard...

you can use these as external as well like esata no case what so ever - I have done this for years when sata came out

here is the newest item I added that I can use as a insert card at the back of a system attached to the sata hotswap card

this is the esata card

what it looks like

just click the link to see

the bracket for the back

a pic of what that looks like

I put a sata hdd on a table next to the connection and it can be used as an external.. faster than usb too

but if you want usb then go for it

all this is some of what can be done

have a nice day
