News
Phace and Misanthrop’s new label NËU has been an interesting one to watch since its inception in late 2017. It’s hosted newcomers like Synergy and Stoner as well as experimental heavyweights like Proxima and Signs. Its label heads have both made appearances as well, with Phace releasing in collab with Signal on NËU002 and Misanthrop getting together with Synergy on NËU006. It seems no matter who the new label brings on, it’s going to be interesting and, of course, new. Enter: The Caracal Project for NËU007, a nearly brand new duo from France whose style is nothing of not different. NËU released the two tracks, “Go Get Some” and “Botfonk” as streaming premieres on their YouTube channel on January 15 and 23 respectively and they show an almost dichotomous diversity in style from the duo. The Caracal Project have done solid on Impact Music and Skank&Bass where their technical prowess and clarity of production really shone through, but they’ve definitely taken it to the next level with “Go Get Some” and “Botfonk.” The former track is the big surprise; fast, synthy and jazzy, it’s completely unconventional but also completely steppy and dancefloor skank-ready. On literally the opposite end of the DnB spectrum, “Botfunk” is dark, heavy and neuro-inspired with metallic-sounding synths and an aggressive, syncopated bass register. It’s also quite steppy, however, so prepare to hear both tracks on the dancefloor in the upcoming winter tour season. Like the label that carries their latest two tracks, it will be interesting to see how The Caracal Project develop their sound and what other surprising diversity they have in store for the wider drum and bass scene. It was definitely a smart move for NËU to snap them up on this release.
