FabDJ
Hi allI am trialling Virtual DJ software and can purchase the basic version for 118 dollars. It seems to be what I want as I am a lazy dj and prefer to party myself with the music sometimes on cruise control. Is it worth the money? I have had free downloads from other web pages that do about the same and its free. I was recommeded to use ATOMIX by a popular city club DJ who works hard for his money and plays to a different demographic.Maby I am buying a product with extra functions that I dont need. The only scratching I do is...... well, we wont go into thatFab DJ. CBG
well... i hate VDJ because its opened up this market of tools with a computer who say they can DJ... like DJ Mi$h Ma$h (first name that came to mind), im not saying you cant DJ btw. But its just makes it way too easy,However it would be gd for mobile DJs who dont give a shit about epic DJ sets. Its cheap, easy and user friendly.Go for it mate. But yeah... DjNikko
theres still a component to djing further than beatmatching and mixing though, you can still put together a shit ass set with auto beatmatch etc. song choice is a major component of what we are all aiming to/already do. SourceRaver
Virtual Dj is made by Atomix so your friend is recommending VDJ. Its a great little program and you can buy a huge range of midi controllers (ie using a dedicated mixing device with faders and jog wheels instead of just a keyboard and mouse) that support VDJ. pill
As mentioned, virtual DJ is a great piece of software. It is very easy to create small loops and do simple mixing for mobile DJ purposes - also alot easier carrying a laptop rather than decks and cds or vynil when you also have to take speakers, lights, etc.As I do mostly weddings, I find I don't even need to mix most stuff live, however, when doing 18ths, 21sts, etc, I use vdj with an external mixer (I think the $99 US version) as I like to have all the faders and buttons in real life rather than using a keyboard. However, If you don't have a mixer, I would advise considering the purchase of a hardware midi controller (From $300 for a behringer BCD3000) which all come bundled with software. While it may be Traktor, it has similar features and some argue it is better. But keep in mind the VDJ version that works with MIDI costs $300 by itself. From what you've said in other threads, it sounds like virtual software will be the best way to get going. It also allows you to buy MP3s from sites like bigpond and use those rather than buying cds and paying the APRA CD to MP3 license. FabDJ
Thanks everyone.I was going to use Virtual DJ Basic US 99 dollars 118 Aus. and a Native Instruments DJ2 Sound cardconnected to a Behringer 200 mixer. What do you think of this for a basic setup?Currently I have the mixer and use the headphone out on the laptop to one channel of the mixer and have to fade/cut on my laptop Dj software I would prefer to have two channels working on my mixer. I use the mike a lot as I do comedy and feel more comfortable with a mixer to mask the silence with a quick cut to a music track.FabDJ
Cupe
offtopic, i'd love to see one of your sets lol
pill
VDJ Basic allows you to split it into left/right, where left is channel 1 (left deck on screen) and right as channel 2 (right deck on screen). That's what I use, I agree it's much easier to use a hardware mixer than a mouse on software. FabDJ
So I dont need a N.I Card. just use the mixer as usual like when using two CD Decks and que with my headphones?I thought it would come out mono, but it may not really matter as its only P.A and you're not there to enjoy the spacial stereo effect sitting dead centre in an arm chair.FabDJ
pill
You're right, it would make it a mono signal but VDJ is pretty decent, it still sounds alright.

SourceRaver
VDJ has two 'decks' (left and right) and allows a lot of options on how you want the audio to be processed. At one stage I had the following set up: I had the stereo signal from the left VDJ deck being sent to an external sound card (just a cheap Behringer USB jobby) and that was in turn plugged into the left channel of a two channel mixer. I also had the right deck sending stereo audio to an identical sound card that was in turn plugged into the right deck of the mixer. That way I could use the pooder to play the music (much like two CD players) but could use my mixer to do the transitions. It was a great for gigs like weddings where I really didnt need to beat mix.Of course you can now buy sound cards that can support two inputs and two outputs (ie a 'dual' external sound card).
