Cupe
Hi nerds I’m gonna do a new machine build with @Mitch and need some sugggestions on parts. From here tho: https://www.scorptec.com.au/ I need a massive tower with space for internal drives, and some basics (gonna get other parts from existing computer). Need: CPU Motherboard RAM Doesn’t need to be insane but moderately industry standard would be good. Nothing over $1K. thx
Scottie
what are you using it for? mostly light office work kinda shit with some gaming or more high cpu workloads like video/photog editing?
Kodiak
Here's an awesome site to help price and source parts. Will even tell you if you have incompatibilities.https://au.pcpartpicker.com/ Also, what do you already have? Are their parts that can be cannibalised like the PSU? Cupe
I don't want to rip too much out of the old machine. So it's almost a new build. On 7/1/2018 at 10:34 PM, Scottie said: what are you using it for? mostly light office work kinda shit with some gaming or more high cpu workloads like video/photog editing? Just the usual. The card I have will run the games I wanna play. I don't do any huge edits. Even an i7 is fine with a mid-high range cpu that isn't a rip off
Scottie
case: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Cases/ATX/57222-FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK 8 internal hdd bays cpu: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/CPU/AMD-Socket-AM4/71983-YD2600BBAFBOX intel is a scam atm, for your budget the best you could get is a i5 8400, this gets you double the threads and negligible loss in performance in intel biased shit motherboard: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Motherboards/AMD-Socket-AM4/72450-X470-GAMING-PLUS - cheapest out of the box motherboard available atm, otherwise you can wait til end of the month when cheaper boards are out and out of the box compatible, or get this https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Motherboards/AMD-Socket-AM4/67486-GA-AB350-Gaming-3 which would require you to get in contact with the scorptec guys to update the bios before they ship it out to you. Saves you $85, the more expensive one is better but not really $85 better for you ram: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Memory/DDR4/65348-HX432C16PB3K2-16 ram prices are a fucking scam right now, this is a pretty decent price for 16gb of good ram. Alternatively, you could go for https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Memory/DDR4/67740-F4-3200C14D-16GFX which is more expensive but higher quality, but probably not worth the extra money for your use case. All up this should come to just under 1k, maybe a little over if you get the more expensive motherboard AND more expensive ram. Cupe
Fuck that case is boss. How are you meant to fit all those fucking cables for 8 hdds I could probs salvage the bits from the current PC and just rebuy for it when they're cheaper Cheers @Scottie
Scottie
you could salvage your psu, graphics card, fans and case. If you're upgrading to a new cpu, then there's no avoiding having to get a new motherboard and new ram too Cupe

If you're upgrading to a new cpu, then there's no avoiding having to get a new motherboard and new ram too tbh if it's under $1k for motherboard, cpu, ram and case then it should be fine. I'll move the graphics card over so that's a massive savings. I'm def gonna switch to that case tho. I have 7 internals that I can move out of the dock and into a tower. need 5 million sata cables + @Mitch
Scottie
if you're looking to have all drive bays filled then you'll need an extra sata slot, most mobos will have 6 at most, unless you spend $300+, then you get 8. There are pci SATA controller cards out there that allow you to have an extra few SATA ports, but I'm not 100% on how they work. mitch might know more Cupe

Cupe
So this is what it's at @Scottie @Mitch @BeatLeSS Case: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Cases/ATX/57222-FD-CA-DEF-R5-BK (This is pretty good, has number of bays i need, looks sick) CPU: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/CPU/AMD-Socket-AM4/71983-YD2600BBAFBOX (Any other suggestions for better/cheaper from another store in Melb? PCG?) RAM: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Memory/DDR4/65348-HX432C16PB3K2-16 or https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Memory/DDR4/67740-F4-3200C14D-16GFX (got any other suggestions? Can buy from another place or online if it's cheaper/better) MB: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Motherboards/AMD-Socket-AM4/72502-X470-GAMING-PRO-CARBON or https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Motherboards/AMD-Socket-AM4/72495-X470-Taichi (Still open to any suggestions/other stores/models) GFX: Going to use my existing GeForce GTX 1060 6GB HDD: Use existing (1 SSD with OS on, 7 HDDs to be mounted internally) PSU: Need a new one. Mad power plus as quiet as possible Then a billion cords I guess.
Scottie
didn't you buy a new 650w psu recently? That'll be plenty for this build even with a million drives and upgrading cpu/gpu in a couple years. https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/x3wWP3 - just over $1.1k with a new psu, but under 1k without. Cpu is about $20 cheaper compared to scorptec, this uses the less fast ram but is $70 cheaper than scorptec's price, motherboard is $10 cheaper. Cpu cooler isn't 100% needed because the stock one for AMD is okay, but the one in the parts list will be pretty much silent and keep your shit cooler Cupe

Cupe
ok. Reopening this since a lot of this shit is possibly out of date now. Also need internal ~10TB drives. Want a solid build that'll last 5+ years. Cap is about $2K
Cupe
This is what I got so far. Looking for suggestions or other options you might think is better @Scottie @Mitch @BeatLeSS @SolDios CPUhttps://www.scorptec.com.au/product/CPU/AMD-Socket-AM4/71983-YD2600BBAFBOX RAMhttps://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Memory/DDR4/80283-CMW32GX4M2E3200C16/?member_pricing=true MOTHERBOARD (needs to be able to handle 8 internal drives) ? SSDhttps://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Hard-Drives-&-SSDs/SSD-2.5-&-PCI-Express/71381-MZ-76E500BW/?member_pricing=true GFX Will probably move over my 1060 for now. Scottie
CPU: Are you going to be doing a lot of media encoding/transcoding, or want to hang onto this rig for as long as possible before upgrading again? If so, get this CPU for $515: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/CPU/AMD-Socket-AM4/77564-100-100000071BOX otherwise, get this for $315 https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/CPU/AMD-Socket-AM4/77560-100-100000031BOX RAM: Consider whether you really need 32gb - if you're just gaming or other light workloads, you won't need more than 16gb, and pricing becomes much better. If you do need 32gb, I'd recommend this kit for $280: https://www.pccasegear.com/products/47633, otherwise if you can settle for 16gb I'd get this at $160: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07X8DVDZZ Motherboard: If you want all 8 SATA drives to be connected directly to the motherboard no hassle, get this: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Motherboards/AMD-Socket-AM4/77670-TUF-GAMING-X570-PLUS-(WI-FI) (though you can find it for ~$50 cheaper on Amazon au). If you want to save more, you can buy this board for $160 (https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Motherboards/AMD-Socket-AM4/78473-B450-GAMING-PLUS-MAX) which has 6 SATA ports, then combine it with this 2 SATA port expansion card for $80 (https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Controllers/SATA-&-SAS-&-M.2/64478-SST-ECS03), which saves you about $100 total over the other board. SSD: I'd recommend getting an m.2 NVMe drive given how many SATA drives you're going to have, getting an m.2 NVMe drive means you're not cutting into the number of SATA drives you can have. I'd recommend this at $100: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/XML48d/silicon-power-a80-512-gb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-sp512gbp34a80m28, or the 1tb model for ~$180. Note: turns out that using an m.2 drive on any motherboard will mean that two SATA ports are disabled, so you'd actually be better off getting a SATA SSD like this for $90 instead if you wanted maximum storage: https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Hard-Drives-&-SSDs/SSD-2.5-&-PCI-Express/71046-CT500MX500SSD1 PSU: What you've chosen is fine Case: What you've chosen is fine Drives: I'd recommend this drive for the best price/GB over 10tb for ~$500 after shipping - https://www.newegg.com/global/au-en/seagate-exos-x14-enterprise-st12000nm0008-12tb/p/1Z4-002P-00JV2. If you don't want to spend so much per drive, but lose some density in terms of the maximum TB amount you can fit in your case, I'd recommend this for $310 - https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/seagate-ironwolf-8tb-7200-rpm-3.5-sata-nas-interna/ST8000VN004 Doddy and Cupe

Scottie
https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/3KrDzN just under 2k all up including a GPU. Add $200 if you go with the 8 core 3700x, $110 if you go for the ASUS X570 TUF motherboard, and $120 if you go for 32gb of ram. Doddy
Just to throw my 2c in. AMD CPUS are so much better bang for buck, obv SSD or the m2 stick to boot OS and HDD for storage. Actually just reading through Scottie's info and that's the way I would go as well. PCpartpicker makes it a quick easy way for compatibility as mentioned earlier. Not sure where you are based Cupe, but generally, when I lived in Canberra got all my stuff thru PC Case Gear (really competitive prices) and when im in Brissy I generally visit UMart (really competitive prices as well and PCCG ship costs end up more $$). I tend to steer clear of MSY, not for pricing or anything but the experience I have had with them, the sales person was a douche mc'gine-stein so have never shopped there again. Anyways those 2 are my go to for components. I have had my current build which is only now starting to show its age (i7-4770k) and its has been fine for the last 6 or so years that cost around 2ish K initially to build, and I haven't bother overclocking anything either, but it works fine for the missus and is stable and i think my next build will be along those lines and possibly a gumtree cheapie just for linux distros to play with or just go the whole hog and get a rack mount server and run multiple VMs on it. Side note, are you comfortable putting the pieces together and building it yourself, and may I ask why you chose scorptec? Cupe
Cupe
tbh scorptec dopesn't have to be the place. @Mitch suggested it and he's helping me put it together. I'd opt to pay the store to do it but Mitch is OCD about cable management lel I'll check out PCCG for price matching, tbh I've bought my entire computer history from PCCG or uMart when i lived in Brissie. The place I get it all from doesn't matter just the parts really, and we're pre close to a decent machine here now. For context, I have a fucking TON of data I want shifted inside a tower (30TB+ in internal drives, external drives and bay enclosures) and I want to keep this existing machine running too.
