10 years ago today, deadmau5 released his first official single, “Faxing Berlin,” on Play Records. At the time, Joel Zimmerman was a budding producer, essentially unknown to the rest of the dance music world. The song eventually found its way into the hands of legendary BBC Radio 1 curator Pete Tong thanks to help of Zimmerman’s close friend Chris Lake. With Tong’s support on BBC, “Faxing Berlin” caught fire, gaining support by heavy hitters such as Tiësto and Mark Knight and giving Zimmerman his first break.

That “Faxing Berlin” was able to enamor trance and house veterans alike was a testament to the refinement of its composition. In many ways, “Faxing Berlin” was the song that spawned the now infamous ‘deadmau5 pluck,’ which pervades Zimmerman’s music to this day and has inspired thousands of knock offs over the years.

“Faxing Berlin” eventually became the first single on deadmau5’s legendary Random Album Title, kicking off Zimmerman’s Mau5trap imprint and even receiving a special “Piano Version.”
