Are there tips and things that can be given from current resudents @LabRat @RichoKidd @AlexJ Running a night isn't easy. You need to have DJ's to book, a team of promoters, etc and be prepared to do the same shit week in, week out. I would suggest trying to get in with one of the current bars/clubs rather than going out on your own. AlphaFive 1 Quote
LabRat Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Running a night can be very rewarding and at the same time be one of the shittest things you'll experience. The politics suck but the joy you bring to others is such an amazing thing. My strongest advice is to know your local scene well. You don't wanna put in the effort with little reward. Be friendly with the local DJs. You'll need their charity when you get started. Learn to mix and read crowds yourself, and get some local gigs if you can. Otherwise just keep showing up to club nights and pay attention to what the DJs are doing. Be friendly with the promoters and venue managers too. The more ins you have the better it'll work out for you. it won't hurt to have a chat to the punters when you're out. Just ask them what they wanna see and what music they wanna hear when they go clubbing. A bit of r&d never hurt Quote

Watch how others do it before trying to do it yourself, it really is rather hard. I've been working with Shaker on Mom Spaghetti for a year or two now, and I've seen him want to pull the pin a few times, but it is rewarding, giving younger dudes a chance to shine. If you can get into a venue that will work with you, find some young DJs who have never really left the bedroom but are keen to start, and see if you can put it together, it may work, but defs what Andy said! AlexJ Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Support nights you want to be apart of Start small, if that means getting in the door or getting a set start at the bottem. there are few shortcuts Know what you can bring to the table. you might only get one shot talking to someone who can actually make a booking happen (act, night, etc etc) so make sure you know your shit and be ready to go at a moments notice. (i physically carried around usbs when i was trying to get club work-while i never ended up needing them i did get the interview for my my current job when i pulled out some usbs and told the boss that ill go up and play right now if he wants me too). if your gun ho about getting a night going. make it once a month rather than once a week. Would definitely suggest starting in a small bar first (where you only need like 30-40 people through the door for it to be a success) when you think you can regularly pull 100+ then approach a club. your 100 plus whoever was already planning on hitting the club makes a quite night work opening for. Networking is everything but if you cant count on the support of a few dedicated individuals its going to be a hard road (whether its djs, friends etc) having an entourage always makes you like #bigtime Quote
Pending Posted March 23, 2016 Author Posted March 23, 2016 This is all great, great places to start. How do we start/have these conversations? Like I think the majority of places here the DJ's are hired as staff as opposed being an agency or having someone run the night. Quote

I know that in Perth it's very common to do Fortnightly gigs, a lot of crews tend to do that, some of the more older crews that have the reputation that they do monthly gigs cause they know that they'll always be able to pull a crowd. I think it depends who you are and what pull you have, as well as hoe much money you got. The force majure guys get away with doing monthly stuff Coz they bring in massive names. Basement are the same and a few others. In my case, I was doing fortnightly gigs and I had the impression people lacked the interest for a bit because there was no consistency, nor was there anyone "big" coming to play. It slowly started to become a familiar thing but I always had the intention to just smash it out every week so people had a place to go. Now I gotta suss out how I can get bigger DJs here Quote
